J. Vinton Schafer Construction was proud to join Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) in celebrating the ribbon-cutting for the Howard County Career & Technical Education Center, previously known as the Applications and Research Building, just in time for the start of the 2026–2027 school year.

As a trusted Construction Manager for HCPSS, JVS has had the privilege of completing numerous projects throughout the school system, and we’re proud to continue that partnership with this exciting facility.

This project was truly a team effort. Throughout the summer, our project team and dedicated trade partners put in countless hours to keep construction moving forward, coordinating closely with HCPSS and our architectural partner, Smolen Emr Ilkovitch Architects, to reach this important milestone and prepare the facility to welcome students.

It was a busy summer for JVS throughout Howard County! Across our HCPSS projects, our teams touched more than 350,000 square feet and put over $15.6 million of construction in place this summer. In addition to the Career & Technical Education Center, our teams were hard at work on the Manor Woods Elementary School HVAC Replacement and Oakland Mills Middle School.

These accomplishments are a testament to the dedication of our project teams, trade partners, and the strong relationships we’ve built with HCPSS. A huge thank you to HCPSS, SEI ARCHITECTS, our JVS team, and all of our trade partners for the collaboration, long hours, and commitment it took to keep these projects moving throughout the summer.

We’re proud to continue building alongside HCPSS and helping create and improve the spaces where Howard County students learn, develop skills, and prepare for their futures.

Today, students returned to Dundalk High School, marking an exciting milestone for the J. Vinton Schafer team as we celebrate the completion of the Dundalk High School Addition for Baltimore County Public Schools!

Over the past few weeks, teachers and staff have been moving in, settling into their new spaces, and preparing for the school year. Today, those spaces officially came to life as students walked through the doors for their first day.

This major project expanded the Dundalk High School/Sollers Point Technical High School campus to help address significant capacity needs and support continued enrollment growth. The work included a three-story classroom pod addition and a one-story performing arts addition, providing approximately 55,300 SF of new educational space and creating new opportunities for students and staff.

Delivering a project of this size on an active school campus takes tremendous coordination, planning, communication, and commitment. A huge congratulations and thank you to our JVS project team, trade partners, Baltimore County Public Schools, GWWO, Inc., and everyone who had a hand in bringing this project
across the finish line.

Seeing teachers enjoying their new spaces over the past few weeks and now seeing students filling them on the first day of school is what all of that hard work was for.

Great job, team, and welcome back, students! Here’s to a great 2026–2027 school year!

Celebrating 45 Years of Excellence!

Today, we are proud to recognize Steve Schmidt for an incredible 45 years of service with J. Vinton Schafer Construction.

Since joining the company in 1981 as an apprentice carpenter, Steve has built an extraordinary career through hard work, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to quality. 🌡️ Safety First During Extreme Heat

As temperatures continue to reach dangerous levels across our region, we are reminding our employees, trade partners, and project teams that no schedule is more important than safety.

Working in extreme heat can quickly lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, and other serious health risks. At J. Vinton Schafer Construction, we encourage everyone on our jobsites to:
✅ Stay hydrated throughout the day
✅ Take scheduled breaks in shaded or cooled areas
✅ Watch for signs of heat-related illness in yourself and others
✅ Wear appropriate PPE and lightweight, breathable clothing when possible
✅ Speak up if conditions become unsafe

Construction is a team effort, and looking out for one another is one of the most important things we do. As we navigate this heat wave, let's remain vigilant, stay prepared, and prioritize the well-being of every worker on site.

Work Safe. Stay Hydrated. Look Out for Each Other.
