A True tale of how we are doing in four easy graphs! A graph is worth a thousand truths, especially if you can read them!

Graph 1 shows weekly deaths across the entire pandemic from Jan 2020 at zero deaths to today which we know is underestimated at 1.3 million US deaths. Each peak & valley tells us a lesson about the virus and about our interventions. The first two large peaks are pre-vaccine. The first peak shows the virus acquiring the D614G mutation, making it more transmissible. It was found in nearly all samples by March 2020! The second large peak shows the Alpha wave thru the winter of 20-21- the last we would face without a vaccine. The virus had acquired more transmissibility in this mutation and ranked the number one killer of most American age groups during this time.

Graph 2 shows us coming down off the Alpha wave of deaths as the life-saving vaccine is implemented in early 2021 to the low point of pandemic deaths in July 2021 (about 200+/day). We had acquired some immunity wall from vaccination & prior infection. This low point is immediately followed by the Delta mutation death wave and then the very consequential, game changing Omicron wave. Delta proved to be more transmissible than Alpha and more lethal, but the vaccines were still proving to hold high efficacy against Delta. When the Omicron wave arrived, transmissibility reached the highest it has ever been, immunity was outflanked, overall deaths spiked (2500+/day) and have not ever returned to that low point of July 2021.

Graph 3 Omicron infecting so many people has caused a plethora of sub-variants that have plagued this period driving "wavelets" of spikes in deaths as the virus mutates, the immunity wall wanes due to LOW UPTAKE of vaccine/booster & eventual ebbing of protection gained by prior infection & vaccines. Deaths today are around 275+/day and as you can see a couple weeks ago we were facing over 550+ deaths a day. The pandemic virus is still in the top three killers of Americans, rivaling cancer and heart disease. We have also reacted rashly about stopping protections to prevent the spread! This virus demands a whole of society effort to defeat it.
