3:1 doesn't mean it's three times bigger.

This trips up more people than any other spec on the shelf. The ratio is not a size. It is how far the tube collapses when you heat it.

Recovered ID = expanded ID / ratio. A 3:1 tube with a 6mm expanded ID closes down to 2mm. Same tube, same box - the number is describing the range, not the diameter.

Which is why the ratio question is really a shape question. A crimp, a lug or a connector body is fat in the middle and thin at the wire. Your tube has to slide over the widest point, then collapse far enough to grip the thinnest. That gap is what the ratio has to cover - not the wire.

- Uniform wire, stays dry? 2:1 single wall.
- Bulky or wet? 3:1 dual wall, and the adhesive liner seals as it shrinks.
- The widest steps - connector bodies, backshells, re-jacketing? That is where a higher ratio earns its place.

Sizing heat shrink to the wire is why your splice failed.

A crimped butt connector is always fatter than the wire it sits on. The barrel is the widest point on the whole joint — so it's the barrel, not the wire, that decides which tube will actually slide on.

Get it wrong and there's no recovery. A tube that won't pass the barrel is scrap. You cut it off, throw it away, and start the joint again.

Swipe to slide 2 for the full chart: wire gauge → installed terminal OD → the tube size to order, from 20 AWG all the way to 4/0.

And if you're between sizes, go up. 3:1 recovers far enough to grip the wire on both sides, and the adhesive liner fills whatever is left.
