I had a lot of fun designing and building this one!

One of the biggest challenges with this backyard was the significant elevation change within such a small space. Instead of fighting the slope, we decided to use it to our advantage.

The goal was to make the backyard feel much bigger than it actually is by creating multiple flat areas at different elevations, each serving its own purpose.

We created a space for relaxing around the fire pit, a separate area for the hot tub, another for outdoor dining, and pathways and stairs that connect everything together.

One thing I love about working with elevation changes is how much dimension they can bring to a landscape. When everything is on one flat surface, you see the entire backyard at once. But when you introduce different levels, retaining walls, steps, and transitions, you create depth and separation. Each area becomes its own little destination, and the backyard starts to feel like several outdoor spaces instead of just one.

The different elevations also create different viewing angles. As you move through the backyard, you experience the space differently. What you see from the upper deck is completely different from what you experience sitting in the lower dining area.

That’s what makes designing with elevation so interesting to me. It’s not always about how much square footage you have. Sometimes it’s about how you organize that square footage and how you make people experience it.

For this project, I wanted to create different areas that serve different purposes while still making the entire backyard feel connected.

The lower patio features a spacious fire pit area surrounded by comfortable seating, perfect for gathering with friends, sharing conversations, or simply enjoying a quiet evening. Just a few steps above, the covered gazebo offers another place to relax, with comfortable furniture, lighting, and protection from the weather.

What I really like about this project is how we used the elevation change to our advantage. Instead of trying to make everything one level, we incorporated retaining walls and steps to create two distinct outdoor living spaces. The result is a backyard that feels organized, functional, and inviting.

Sometimes, a great outdoor living space isn’t about adding more features. It’s about making the most of the space you already have and designing everything to work together.

And when the sun starts going down and the lights come on, that’s when this backyard really comes to life.

Sometimes the simplest designs make the biggest statement.
