Impactful student experiences is the mission of the NENY Student Startup Experience. Here's one great example of how that mission is achieved:

When graduate student, now alumna, Pallavi Billava shared that her work with Natrion led her to a full time position with the component and cell manufacturer. Here's what Billava had to say about her experience:

"My experience at Natrion has been a great opportunity to work in a fast-paced startup environment with real-world impact. Over the summer, I worked within the data analytics and infrastructure team, supporting data collection, processing, and analysis of production quality and electrochemical data. I built data pipelines, automated analytical workflows using scripting and machine learning techniques, performed statistical analysis, and developed reports and dashboards to help the team make better decisions. I also contributed to early-stage computer vision solutions for defect detection. The work was very hands-on and closely tied to ongoing R&D.

Through the NENY SSE program, I was able to discover and work with a company like Natrion, which I likely wouldn’t have had access to otherwise. I’m really grateful for that opportunity, as it gave me exposure to meaningful projects and real-world challenges early on.

As I transition into a full-time role, my work will shift toward software engineering in computer vision and machine learning, building backend systems and web applications that support inference and analysis workflows.

Overall, I’m very grateful for the experience and excited to continue growing in this role."

"NENY’s SSE program did far more than just help me secure an internship, it launched my professional career in an industry I had never previously considered. It reshaped my path through the knowledge I gained, the mentors who guided me, and the opportunities I earned."

Senior Finance and MIS major, Dolan Ma, worked with e-Zinc, through the NENY Student Startup Experience in the summer of 2025. There, he met e-Zinc's CCO and Binghamton alum Balki Iyer MS '00, who offered him a subsequent internship at Green Upcycle, leading to a full time position. This example among others from the program reveal a highly sought after pathway from higher education to workforce, that retains young talent in our region and network.

Thank you, Dolan, for sharing your experience and to Balki Iyer for the positive impact you've had on the program.

The Student Startup Experience will soon be seeking student applicants for the Fall 2026 semester, learn more at https://bit.ly/3PrDT89
