💧 "I've Been Pouring Vinegar Down My A/C Drain Every Month..."

That's one of the first things homeowners tell us when we arrive for a clogged drain line.

The problem?

We're still standing there because the drain line is clogged.

Here in Florida, we clear multiple condensate drain lines every week. By the time we arrive, the blockage usually isn't just algae anymore. We often find biofilm, dust, insulation fibers, pet hair, dirt, and years of buildup inside the drain.

Household products may help with routine maintenance, but once a drain line becomes blocked, it usually needs to be physically cleared with professional equipment.

If your A/C is shutting off, your drain pan is filling with water, or you're seeing water around your indoor unit, don't ignore it. Catching it early can prevent water damage and bigger repairs.

Bubbles don’t lie.

This was a leaking reversing valve showing bubbles during our leak test before replacement.

When a heat pump is low on refrigerant, the real question is not just “how much refrigerant does it need?” The real question is where is it leaking from?

This is one of the ways we verify the problem before making the repair. Leak testing helps confirm what failed, explain it clearly to the customer, and make sure we are replacing the right part for the right reason.

On this one, the reversing valve was leaking and had to be replaced.

Dryer lint can do more than clog your dryer vent.

On this call, the dryer vent was located close to the outdoor A/C unit, and lint was being pulled into the condenser coil.

Over time, that buildup restricted airflow through the coil. When the condenser can’t breathe properly, the system can run hotter, work harder, and put extra stress on parts like the fan motor and run capacitor.

This one needed a coil wash and a run capacitor replacement.

A good maintenance visit is not just spraying the unit and moving on. It is looking at what is actually affecting the system — including what is around it.

If your dryer vent blows near your outdoor A/C unit, keep an eye on lint buildup around the coil.

When a customer asks, “How do you know the board is bad?”

Well… sometimes there are signs. 😂

Not every HVAC diagnosis is this obvious, but this control board definitely left a clue. Burn marks, electrical damage, and failed components are all things we look for when tracking down why a system is not working properly.

A good diagnosis is not guessing. It is checking, testing, and sometimes finding the evidence right in front of you.

This is one most homeowners would never think about.

The dryer vent on this home was blowing lint right near the outdoor A/C unit. Over time, that lint got pulled into the condenser coil and started clogging it up.

When the condenser coil gets packed with lint, dirt, or debris, the unit cannot move heat the way it should. That can cause the system to run hotter, work harder, and put extra stress on parts like the fan motor and run capacitor.

On this one, the motor was overheating, the run capacitor had to be replaced, and the coil needed to be washed.

That is why a real maintenance visit is more than just “spray the unit and go.” We look around the equipment and check the things that may be causing the problem.

A simple homeowner tip: if your dryer vent blows near your outdoor unit, keep an eye on lint building up around the condenser. Some people even secure a piece of stocking or lint-catching material over the dryer vent outlet to catch a lot of the lint before it reaches the A/C coil. Just make sure it is checked and cleaned often so the dryer vent does not get blocked.

Small things around the system can turn into bigger problems.

Just part of keeping everything current and doing what we’re supposed to do. Some nights it’s service calls, some nights it’s classes, paperwork, and making sure the business stays on track.

He’s in it till the end too — apparently working long hours with me now.

This is why drain safety and maintenance matter.

A clogged or overflowing A/C drain line is not always just a little water issue. In this case, water had been overflowing inside the furnace area with no proper float safety switch to shut the system down.

Over time, that moisture caused heavy corrosion around the gas components.

When water, rust, gas piping, burners, wiring, and safety controls are all involved, it becomes more than a comfort problem. It becomes something that needs to be looked at seriously by a qualified HVAC technician.

Maintenance is not just about keeping the system clean. It is about catching things like this before they turn into bigger issues.

A small safety switch and a properly maintained drain line can make a big difference.

Pet hair does not always stay on the floor. 😅

This was dog hair and buildup pulled out of an A/C drain line. It was packed in there good enough that we had to use both air pressure and vacuum pressure to get the plug cleared.

A lot of homeowners think about pet hair when it comes to filters, but it can also contribute to buildup inside the system and drain line over time.

That can lead to:

clogged drain lines
water backing up
float switches tripping
no-cool calls
water damage if the system is not protected properly

If you have pets, keeping up with filter changes and regular A/C maintenance matters even more.

This little yucca plant decided to show off today. 😂

I started filming the small plant at the bottom because it was blooming, then realized the bloom stalk went way up like it belonged to a tree.

Tiny plant. Giant bloom. Full Florida attitude.

One of those random things you notice during the day that makes you stop for a second and appreciate how weird and cool nature can be.
