The Augusta, Georgia Chapter of the Gold Prospectors Association of America was established in 2001 with the goal of uniting people together throughout the Central Savannah River Area who had an interest in gold prospecting.

Gold was first discovered in Georgia on this day (October 27) in 1828 by Benjamin Parks! According to legend, Benjamin Parks was walking through the woods of north Georgia while hunting deer when he stumbled over an unusual rock. Upon closer examination he noticed something glistening in the stone - gold! 🪨⛏️

The River Winds Through History: The Dorn Mine

Not long after California found its 49ers, South Carolina had the Class of ’52— the golden-eyed prospectors that came the year gold fever hit the Savannah River Basin.

In 1852, William Burkhalter Dorn struck a rich vein of gold near present-day McCormick, South Carolina. The mine reportedly yielded nearly $1 million in gold before the vein ran dry in the late 1850s. The mine’s legacy, however, extended well beyond the gold. Industrialist Cyrus McCormick purchased the property in 1871, and the settlement that grew around the mine eventually became the town of McCormick in 1882.

Today, the old mine offers a glimpse into a time when the promise of gold helped shape the communities of the Savannah River watershed. Turns out, there was more than one kind of treasure there.

The Southeast Gold Prospectors Expo will be held May 14-16, 2027 at LDMA Vein Mountain which is nestled in the tranquil wooded setting of Nebo, North Carolina. The property features gold-bearing quartz veins, alluvial gravels, and soft bedrock. It is the ideal camp for a weekend getaways featuring RV hookups (30 amp, water), clubhouse, designated prospecting areas, and more. Owned by LDMA (Lost Dutchman’s Mining Association).

• Discussed Rick Harrison’s (of Pawn Stars) recent investment in a gold mine in Nevada.
• Discussed the recent dig at Graves Mountain and the history behind the property. Andrés gave a recap of his experience being a vendor at the event.
• Discussed our chapter’s involvement in Putt-Putt’s upcoming Trunk-Or-Treat event on Thursday, October 22 from 5-7pm. This will be a great family friendly event.
