Engineered stone, commonly marketed as quartz countertops, has become one of the most popular materials used in modern kitchens and bathrooms. While valued for its durability and sleek appearance, the material is also drawing growing attention from occupational health experts due to serious health risks for workers who fabricate and install it.

When engineered stone is cut, ground, or polished, extremely fine silica dust can be released into the air. Over time, inhaling this dust can cause silicosis, a severe and irreversible lung disease that scars the lungs and can lead to breathing failure. Silicosis is also associated with lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other serious health complications.

EMSL’s Industrial Hygiene Division provides crystalline silica testing to help identify and quantify respirable silica in air samples. To learn more about Silica testing, visit https://lnkd.in/gcS8Y8ns.

EMSL was tasked with assisting a client who was investigating the extent of Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA) contamination in metavolcanic rock (amphibolite schist) at a school construction site in California. EMSL performed a combination of California Air Resources Board (CARB) 435 method using PLM and TEM, as well as TEM Mass Analysis coupled with ASTM D-7521, in an effort to provide strategic information. Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) was also performed at project inception.

EMSL received inquiries about organophosphorus pesticides. Clients were asked to sample in homes and businesses where clients have sprayed pesticides ranging from Malathion to Dursban. EMSL utilizes GC capabilities of measuring these compounds in air using NIOSH and OSHA methods.
