Hvolsvöllur - Viking Era Handcrafts

Hvolsvöllur - Viking Era Handcrafts Handcrafted viking era wool, ironwork, spinning, nálbinding, tools, knives, and a whole lot more. Blacksmithing is a passion unlike any other.

Historically accurate and "historically adequate" items for the most discriminating of re-enactors. It is a skill that comes from years of literal blood sweat and tears. It is a heart that plays with fire for fun and is content in the heat of the moment. If you can’t take the heat, stay out of the forge. Unlike what so many have seen of late, Blacksmithing is an art that requires time, patience an

d skill deeper than you can fit into any television program. Jason Nass currently lives in Cleveland, Ohio and has made forging the primary love of his life for over 20 years. His forging experiences are wide and varied, including industrial closed and open die forging, knife making, tool making, ornamental and architectural iron, fabrication of structural iron, and traditional blacksmithing, specializing in Viking era reproductions. He currently serves on the Board of Directors with the Western Reserve Artist Blacksmith Association (WRABA), and hosts Open Forge nights from his personal workshop where he strives to share the love of this folk art in hopes of keeping the trade alive. He teaches both private and group classes in traditional and contemporary blacksmithing techniques as well as tool making. If you are interested in delving into the craft of blacksmithing or learning more advanced techniques, he has classes suited to any skill level and age. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the bodhran, Celtic music, spending time with his counterpart and partner Rowan Canterbury and his rather spoiled dogs. Both Jason and Rowan do what they do in a world where things are “pre-made” and so many haunt the isles of stores, to hopefully help a few learn that there will never be an end to the magic and the necessity of knowing how to make something with your own hands.

So, as many of you know, we have a very big event coming up.We will be at the village vikings festival in Burton.Ohio on May second and third. We've decided to make a youtube channel for Hvolsvollur.com and i'm going to be in my wool room all day Saturday making small short videos of things like how, I make my nalbind needles and just kind of showing how I go about making the things that I make. The picture is a jute nalbinded basket.I did use a stronger needle, because this jute is really tough. But I will also be making grass baskets and pine needle baskets. These YouTube videos are also going to feature nalbinding classes and wool processing classes. So as soon as they are up, I promise I will post a link.I hope to see all of you at the village vikings festival.Lots of hugs and love Rowan.

First off: Yes, I have cats. Second: YES I wash all my products prior to sales...lol... Truth is, keeping my cats out of the yarn should be an onlympic sport!

I want to keep posting and updating and am sorry we have been out of it. I lost my best friend a while back to cancer, (My dog Riddick) and honestly, I have been crippled emotionally.

As well, and this is rather ironic, I fell while in Akueyri, Iceland and landed on my left elbow. I had been in a bad car accident in 2013 and messed both my arms up, so the fall really inflamed the shoulder and elbow issues and I am left handed. BUT I am not one to stay down long!

We are working on a youtube channel and the company website, adding more product and gearing up for the summer events.
My Nalbind classes will start on the Youtube channel soon and will not be limited to historically accurate fiber arts.

I will do a LOT of historically accurate stuff, however, I will also be bringing Nalbinding into 2026 by offering alternative fiber meathods, stitch adaptations and patterns for modern clothing, blankets and all kinds of fun stuff.

CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL THIS SUMMER!!

We will be doing full demonstrations at the following events:

Although I am very dedicated to the preservation of the viking culture, i think i'm going to be on a mission to make nalbinding more modernly popular. I've had so many conversations with people who say, oh well, just do hats and mittens and stick with what we have found, but naaaaa! Yes, I will always stick with traditional nalbinding for the Viking reenactment events. However, I totally plan on making things like scarves. Sweaters and other things out of nalbinding so we can bring it into this century, so hopefully it will live on for many, many, many years.

I have started making nalbinded stuff from variouse yarns and materials. Why? I am very aware that there are many that are either allergic to wool or not keen on the feeling so I wanted to offer nalbinded stuff they can wear. After all, everyone should have a nalbinded bit and bobble, hat or such. :)
