💡 Heat pumps don’t just “set themselves.”

We got a call from a homeowner who’d been staring at $590 electric bills for two months straight and couldn’t figure out why. System was “working,” house felt warm… but the meter was spinning like crazy.

When we showed up, nothing was technically broken.

The issue?
👉 The heat pump wasn’t tuned or set up correctly.

Modern heat pumps have a ton of adjustable parameters—balance points, staging, auxiliary heat lockouts, fan settings, defrost behavior, and more. If those aren’t dialed in for our North Idaho climate and that specific home, the system can run way harder (and more expensive) than it needs to.

We went through the setup, fine-tuned the controls, and optimized how the system actually operates.

📉 Result: electric bill cut nearly in half.
🏠 Same comfort.
⚡ Way less wasted energy.

This is the kind of stuff that doesn’t show up on a basic install checklist—but it makes a huge difference long-term.

This week I decided to surprise James with a little gesture of appreciation. I told him he had a “no cooling” service call and gave him an address… but when he showed up, there wasn’t an air conditioner waiting — it was his dad, ready to play a round of golf at Highlands Golf Course.
It took me back to being a kid, thinking I had school and then suddenly getting told, “Grab your gear, we’re going hunting,” or loading up the dirt bikes instead. Those spontaneous breaks stick with you — and I think every once in a while, it’s good to remind ourselves that work will wait, but those moments won’t.
James has been a huge part of Prairie Heating & Air’s success, and a day on the course felt like the right way to say thanks.
