In recognition of National Safety Month, we’re highlighting projects that help support the critical facilities communities rely on every day.

Allen + Shariff provided MEP engineering services for the Talbot County 911 Center in Easton, MD, including a 2,600 SF addition and renovation of the existing 12,100 SF facility. Designed to support 24-hour operations, the expanded center includes command offices, dispatch areas, kitchen, bunk and shower facilities, and enhanced building infrastructure.

The project featured a VRF mechanical system, upgraded plumbing systems and a complete electrical distribution upgrade.

Reliable building systems play an important role in helping mission-critical facilities operate safely, efficiently, and continuously when they’re needed most.

Chicago is taking a major step toward transforming its building design criteria with the introduction of Phase 3 of the Construction Codes Modernization Initiative. This newly proposed package represents the culmination of a multiyear effort to align local requirements with national consensus standards while addressing the unique needs of the city's built environment. Modernizing these standards is essential for the industry because it ensures future construction practices keep pace with rapid technological shifts, updates gas-piping safety requirements for the first time in 25 years, and reduces bureaucratic barriers to development.

The proposed framework introduces critical advancements for building systems and energy performance:
🔸Mechanical and Fuel Gas Code Overhauls: Updates appliance safety standards to reflect modern materials and authorizes mechanical-only ventilation in residential buildings with 20 or more units based on a successful pilot program.
🔸Energy Transformation Code: Aligns energy efficiency requirements with national standards to reduce upfront costs, clarifies rules for renovation projects, and retains strict electrification and solar-ready mandates.
🔸Interim Fire Prevention Code: Establishes rigorous fire safety standards for solar panel installations and large battery energy storage systems to safely accommodate evolving green technology.

Understanding code changes and their impact on design remains an important conversation across the industry.

VP of Sustainability Services, Seif Abaza was invited to speak at Grimm + Parker on his insights into the 2021 and 2024 Maryland codes, sharing insights on key updates and considerations shaping today’s project environment. Our Business Development Manager, Terry Michels, joined the presentation and the valuable exchange of ideas.

Thank you to Grimm + Parker for the invitation and collaboration.

Great connecting with leaders from across the Commonwealth, the City of Pittsburgh, and Allegheny County at the SMPS Pittsburgh Economic Development & PA Policy program. 🤝

Our Business Development Manager, Paul Messineo, attended the event and had the opportunity to engage with public officials and industry professionals on the conversations shaping economic development and growth throughout the region, including Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O'Connor, Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, and Pennsylvania State Senator Lindsey Williams.

We appreciate the opportunity to be part of the discussion and connect with so many leaders working toward Pittsburgh’s future.

In case you missed it. 👀

The conversation around Net Zero Energy Buildings continues to grow as more organizations look for smarter, more sustainable ways to design and operate their facilities.

Our latest article breaks down how strategies like high-performance building envelopes, electrification, smart controls, and renewable energy integration are helping shape the next generation of sustainable buildings.

We also highlight real-world examples already putting these ideas into practice and what the shift toward Net Zero means for the future of the built environment.
