Pattern works in a bathroom when it gets the whole wall. A strip of it reads as a border; floor to ceiling, it reads as a decision.

This wall carries a faded tapestry pattern in rust and blue, no two tiles quite alike, and it runs full height with a long window set right into it so the trees show through. Everything beside it stays quiet: glossy white tile in the shower, a simple niche, a clean counter.

One wall does the talking; the rest of the room lets it.

A green kitchen is a commitment. The color goes on every door and drawer, so everything around it has to be chosen to let it lead.

This one carries sage across the perimeter and the island in one unbroken coat. White subway tile and grey-veined counters step back, butcher block on the island warms it up, and the appliances run dark so the color stays the loudest choice in the room. Slim metal pulls repeat on every front.

One color, carried all the way through.

A bathroom shows every finish in a single view, so the palette has to agree with itself.

This one runs charcoal cabinetry against a white counter, grey hex underfoot, and a shower tiled to the ceiling in a warm stone. The storage tower carries the same doors as the vanity at full height, so the dark side of the room holds together as one piece.

Black hardware does the rest, repeating from the mirror frame down to the shower glass.

Nothing in it was chosen alone.

Pale cabinetry, heavy grey veining through the counters, dark cage pendants in a row over the island. A quiet palette that would hold up on its own.

The sink is the one departure. Hammered metal with an apron front, sitting where most kitchens put something smooth and white. It takes the light differently from everything around it.

The best home bars don't read as equipment. They read as cabinetry that happens to pour.

Two taps rise beside a drip tray set flush into the stone. The cooler underneath wears a panel cut from the same stained wood as the drawers, so nothing metal breaks the run. Glass-front uppers on either side are lit from within, and the middle bay stays open so not everything hides behind doors. The granite doesn't stop at the counter. It climbs the full height of the alcove.

Every piece has a reason for being there.

The coolest room in the house in August is the one downstairs. Finishing it is the easy call. What goes in it is the part worth thinking about.

This basement got a full bar. Wide wood planks wrap the front, a thick counter runs the whole length of it, and copper pendants hang from a ceiling painted black so the light stays where it's wanted. Behind that sits cabinetry and dark stone holding the sink and the storage. A deep blue wall at the far end keeps it from going flat.

Nothing flashy, just done right.

It ties the ceiling to the floor and the doorways without adding a single color to the palette.

A statement accent needs room to be loud. Here it's blue and gold tile from Italy, set on the diagonal behind the range and given a border of its own so it reads as one piece instead of a run of pattern. Everything around it stays quiet: white subway across the rest of the backsplash, cream cabinetry, grey granite with real movement in it.

The hood carries the same finish, which keeps that whole wall reading as one surface with the panel set into it.

A second story addition works when it stops looking like one. Rooflines have to line up, siding and trim carry across the whole facade, and the proportions of the new floor sit right against what was already standing. Get any of that wrong and it shows from the street.

Look at this one from the curb and it reads as a single house. Nothing announces where the work happened.

This one breaks the upper bank with an open niche, so a long wall of doors has somewhere to breathe.
