PHILOSOPHY
Battle Associates Architects is dedicated to design and client service, balancing our commitment to unique design with our commitment to accommodating each client’s lifestyle and needs. Our designs grow from a specific sense of place. Organizing each project to celebrate the strengths of its site, ranging from sun exposure, to views, to water’s edge, we develop our architecture to capit

alize on these assets, while creating inside spaces that are comfortable yet exceptional experiences for our clients. We consider ourselves to be problem-solvers, reconciling the constraints of lifestyle, budget and site, while staying true to our design philosophy. Our client service reflects our commitment to give each client particular attention. We are committed to listen and to respond, throughout the design process, and beyond. EXPERIENCE
In our twenty-five years of history, we have designed over one hundred projects throughout New England, the Adirondacks, the Mid Atlantic, the Florida Keys and Canada. Principal John Battle, AIA is a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Boston Society of Architects. His designs have been widely published in numerous magazines and periodicals.

Honored to be featured in the 30th Anniversary Issue of Boston Design Guide and proud to be recognized as a Boston Design Guide Legend, celebrating more than 15 years of partnership. This featured project showcases the thoughtful transformation of a 120-year-old farmhouse, where preservation and innovation work hand in hand.

Battle Architects reimagined the historic property to meet the needs of modern family living while maintaining the character and charm that had evolved over generations. Original rooflines, antique beams, and historic details were carefully preserved, while new open-concept living spaces created a natural flow throughout the home. A standout element of the renovation is the restored barn, transformed into the heart of the living space. By blending contemporary functionality with authentic historic character, the project demonstrates how old and new can coexist seamlessly, creating a home that feels both timeless and current.

Thank you to our clients, collaborators, and for recognizing the work that continues to inspire us.

Concord Center for the Visual Arts | Concord, MA is coming along beautifully. With landscaping set for August, this thoughtful expansion honors the past while creating space for future creativity. Replacing the former Coleman Gallery, the new Art Barn features two generous classrooms that can open into one flexible venue for exhibitions and special events. Clad in gray vertical siding with dark trim, the addition offers a modern counterpoint to the original 1921 building. A glass rear wall and expansive skylight fill the interior with natural light, creating an inspiring environment for artists and visitors alike.

Transforming a seasonal retreat into a full-time lakefront home 🌿🏡
Designed for quiet observation, this residence allows the owners to take in everything happening on the lake—without being seen. Every bedroom and living space is oriented toward the water, creating a constant connection to the view.
The exterior palette blends layered greens so the home disappears into its surroundings, while the interior opens up with a flowing kitchen, dining, and living space. A lofted upper level—evolved during construction—features a circular opening that visually connects both floors. With 3 bedrooms (including 2 primary suites), a garage + workshop, and natural materials like wood timbers throughout, the home balances privacy, openness, and modern rustic warmth.

Designed for two clients with distinct creative lives—she an artist, he a musician. The result is a composition of three distinct volumes, each with its own identity. The “Red Barn” houses the music studio along with garage, guest, and children’s spaces. The “Industrial” volume is dedicated to the art studio. At the center, the “Middle” volume serves as the heart of daily living. Materials, forms, and color reinforce the individuality of each structure, while their placement frames views of a man-made pond and a preserved locus tree.
A home shaped by creativity, where architecture reflects the lives within it.
