As one of the nation's "birdiest" states, Louisiana plays an extraordinary role in helping to protect the hundreds of millions of birds that pass through the state's skies each spring and fall, according to LSU assistant professor and bird conservation scientist Erik Johnson.

In this Q&A, Johnson discusses what makes Louisiana so important to migrating birds, the challenges they encounter along the way, and how simple actions can help make their journeys safer: https://lawildlifefed.org/2026/10/lsu-expert-birdiest-state-louisiana-holds-key-role-in-protecting-migratory-birds/

Bats play an important role in Louisiana ecosystems, helping control mosquito populations and other agricultural pests. One way to support local bat populations is by installing a bat house like the one pictured here.

For best results, place bat houses 10 to 15 feet above the ground in an open area so bats have enough space to safely take off. In Louisiana's hot climate, lighter-colored bat houses are recommended to help keep them from overheating during the summer months.
