Berliner Architects recently hosted a group of high school students participating in Blueprint's Summer Internship Program, which gives young people the opportunity to explore careers in real estate development, construction, engineering, finance, law, architecture, and related fields.

Members of our team presented topics to the interns to provide an overview of the architect's role. Richard shared his passion for architecture and Jules discussed education and licensing. We walked the group through a client presentation, demonstrated architectural modelling software, and discussed marketing and business development.

We enjoyed sharing our time and expertise with these young people to help them envision their futures. Thank you to the Blueprint team for including Berliner Architects in their mission to create pathways into careers that strengthen schools and communities.

We are delighted to welcome Ashlē Fauvre to the Berliner team as a Project Architect. She holds an M.Arch from University of Washington and is a licensed CA architect. Her work has been awarded and published by the AIA, LA Business Council, LA Times, New York Times, Dwell magazine, JA, and others. Ashlē's experience encompasses residential and civic projects in the USA, Japan and Denmark. She brings a passion for social justice and an artist’s vision to the team.

Berliner Architects is currently engaged in the design phase for the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at Mayfield Junior School of the Holy Child Jesus in Pasadena, CA.

Located at the heart of Mayfield Junior’s 4-acre campus, the CTL will house the school’s library, student services center, and science classrooms. We studied the patterns of students moving through campus to locate the building in a way that supports both movement and calm. A breezeway bisects the ground level to preserve a key site circulation pattern; small seating areas are arrayed alongside pathways and indoor spaces to extend teaching areas.

The student resource center and library provide flexible learning spaces focused on nurturing academic excellence and holistic wellness. The second level science center arranges four classrooms around a central teacher’s hub, allowing outdoor classrooms to wrap the perimeter.

When building on an existing campus, we always consider how the project relates to the school’s past, and how it speaks to the future. The CTL architecture echoes the craftsman legacy of Pasadena with large porches and deep overhangs but maintains a modern outlook with the complex vaulted roof form. The materials pull inspiration from the Arroyo Seco, with earth tones and light woods combining with a variety of greens to create a serene and joyful backdrop for the students.

Berliner Architects was honored to work with the CA Center for Climate Change Education at Los Angeles Community College District to host 2 interns in our office this summer. "Every Career is a Climate Career Summer Internship" offered students a work-based learning opportunity and furthered their education around the impact of climate change.

Students Diego Rodriguez (LAHC) and Anna Saucedo (ELAC) culminated their internships with a presentation to our team. "Building Resilient Futures: Parking Lot to Schoolyard Conversions" examined issues around AB 2097, which eliminates parking requirements for projects within half a mile of public transit. This legislation creates the opportunity for schools in dense urban areas to repurpose heat-trapping and underutilized space into outdoor learning and play environments.

Diego and Anna researched project precedents, sustainability issues and considerations, and used resources including the National Community Schoolyards Decision Support Tool to identify two case study sites for their work. They completed site analysis, zone planning, landscape and materials explorations before rendering their designs in Revit, Rhino and Enscape. The reclaimed parking lots were transformed to provide outdoor learning, recreational and multifunctional spaces on their chosen campus. These case studies will be valuable portfolio pieces for Anna and Diego, demonstrating their ability to design and problem-solve within real-world environments.

Congratulations to Anna and Diego on completing the internship with flying colors! The Berliner team wishes them both every success as they continue their journey in architecture.

It's Throwback Thursday and we're taking a look at the campus of Los Angeles Community College District 's Pierce College. The College embarked on a major expansion in the early 2000’s that continued until 2015. New classrooms, buildings, dormitories and recreational facilities allowed the school to serve a larger student population and provide enhanced educational opportunities.

Berliner Architects' Aesthetic Master Plan provided Mission Revival architectural vocabulary, derived from the earliest buildings on the campus, that united diverse styles into a cohesive whole. Berliner was selected subsequently to design the Campus-Wide Improvements, including a revitalized pedestrian mall and renovation of all exterior spaces in the campus core. The collaboration with Pierce College eventually led to the North of Mall project, which encompassed 11 academic and administrative buildings.

The Brahma Bull sculpture introduced a new landmark and meeting place for the College population. The design was derived from the Pierce Brahma logo, interpreted in layers of CorTen steel that has weathered to a rich, natural rusted finish. It stands over 13 feet high on a rugged concrete plinth surrounded by landscaping and seating, and is the defining element of the totally redesigned Brahma Square.

Berliner Architects has been designing a Green Schoolyard transformation at LAUSD Christopher Dena Elementary School in Boyle Heights. Thanks to funding from the CAL FIRE Green Schoolyards Grant Program, these schoolchildren will enjoy a cooler, healthier space to learn and play.

The project includes replacing 2,000 sq ft of asphalt with lawns, shade trees, and shrubs, as well as redesigned and expanded PE areas. The school will gain basketball and volleyball courts, kickball diamonds, and a running track, while retaining the existing wall ball structure and providing more shade.

We are proud to be part of the school's greening efforts, creating a sustainable, resilient environment for Dena's students and transforming a heat island into an enriching, exciting new outdoor space.

The San Francisco Unified School District's Schoolyards Comprehensive Plan was featured in Landscape Architecture Magazine last month. Berliner Architects collaborated with SITELAB urban studio to develop the Plan, which provides tools to address specific environmental characteristics of varied school sites across the district. The 321-page document is grounded on the health benefits of open-air spaces for the district’s 50,000 students at 122 schools.

The Plan presents a landscape-centric approach to future improvements. Maps showing varying microclimates and soil composition help determine specific planting, storm drainage, shading, and other design approaches tailored to each school’s conditions.

This plan is not just about improving facilities—it is a guide for creating spaces that ignite curiosity, foster belonging, and reconnect children to the natural world. This plan provides a clear, forward-thinking approach to redesigning school grounds as vibrant, functional spaces that support learning, play, and community.
