Today, Hooper kicked off our annual Month of Caring!

Throughout the month of September we not only run a United Way corporate giving campaign, but we offer a variety of ways employees can give back. Whether that's through our giving blood at our blood drive, donating their time through volunteer events, or giving goods in one of our donation bins.

This year, our kickoff included speakers from United Way of Dane County, United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, and Operation Fresh Start. Our United Way speakers, Gary Schmidt, Molly VanDerWielen, Casey Aicher, and Elisa Perez Carrasco, did a wonderful job of explaining how United Way works and how they prioritize community wellbeing through youth opportunities, financial security, healthy communities, and community resiliency.

Additionally, Faith Hupf from Operation Fresh Start highlighted how they provide wrap around support to young adults in Dane County, allowing individuals to get access to the resources they need to fin success.

While replacing a pole on a distribution line, Blaine Moran and his crew noticed that the system neutral was damaged. Although the neutral initially appeared to be intact, the outer aluminum strands had broken, leaving only the steel core supporting the wire. Blaine's crew stopped work, discussed the change in plan, and reviewed the new hazards they would need to control. After the damaged section was repaired, work resumed safely.

Conditions changed, so the plan had to change, too. Taking the time to stop, reassess, and adjust the plan helped prevent a potential incident.

Believe it or not, back-to-school season is right around the corner. That means more pedestrians, bicyclists, and school buses on the road.

Take extra care near schools, playgrounds, parks, residential areas, and even college campuses. Remember that children can be unpredictable and may not recognize traffic hazards. If you have children at home, now is a great time to review and practice safe walking, biking, and school bus habits with them.

When you're behind the wheel, stay alert for school buses. Yellow flashing lights mean the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children, so slow down and be prepared to stop. Red flashing lights and an extended stop arm mean children are getting on or off the bus. While the specific rules vary by state and roadway type, every U.S. state prohibits passing a school bus when its stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing in at least some situations. Be familiar with your state's school bus laws and always follow them.

One of the Hooper’s Safety Department's key priorities has been increasing both the number and quality of safety observations across our jobsites. Every observation is an opportunity to recognize safe work, identify potential risks, and create conversations that help us learn and improve before an incident occurs.

Across Hooper, Safety Specialists, Foremen, General Foremen, and Project/Operations Managers are using the Safety Observation process to make jobsite visits more meaningful. Rather than simply checking compliance, observations focus on understanding the work being performed, recognizing hazards, and discussing the controls that keep employees safe.

Recently, Substation Project Manager Eric Schneider in Hooper’s Electric Power Division submitted this Good Catch after a jobsite visit:
"After the switchgear was set, I noticed the shackle pin on the rigging was attached to the sling instead of the bow. I thought it was set up incorrectly and asked the crane subcontractor if the shackle had been installed backwards."

The question sparked discussion between the project team, the crane subcontractor, and subject matter experts at Hooper and Missouri Valley JATC. Although this lift was already completed and the rigging configuration was ultimately determined to be acceptable for this specific application, the discussion strengthened everyone's understanding of proper rigging practices and identified opportunities for a more efficient and consistent rigging approach.

Most importantly, Eric's observation demonstrated exactly the type of questioning attitude we want to encourage. He noticed something that didn't look right and respectfully asked questions. That simple action led to Respectful Collaboration, one of Hooper's Core Values, as people with different perspectives worked together to better understand the work. By asking questions and sharing knowledge, the team improved its ability to recognize hazards and make future lifts even safer.
