Our team recently completed a final acoustical site walk at Hale Hōkūala Kauaʻi, a highly anticipated new luxury hotel within the Curio Collection by Hilton nestled along the lagoon with sweeping views of Kauaʻi's iconic mountain range.

Hale Hōkūala promises a culturally immersive experience so D.L. Adam’s role was making sure the acoustic environment lives up to the luxury standard. For a project like this, acoustics are a priority in nearly every element of the building. That means high sound isolation between guestrooms so guests never hear their upstairs or next-door neighbors. It also includes vibration isolation for heavy HVAC equipment, piping, ductwork so mechanical systems stay silent in the background. Lastly, room acoustic treatments are implemented in gathering spaces so conversation, music, and ambiance support the intent of the hotel.

DLAA collaborated with local architecture firm AHL on the design, with construction led by Nordic PCL. The project is on track to wrap up by end of summer, with guest rooms opening in October 2026.

DLAA provided consulting services for a new auditorium for the Headquarters Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC) at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia that serves as one of the major commands of the U.S. Air Force. The command supports 34 flying wings and over 1,100 personnel, managing combat-ready forces for worldwide operations.

The AFRC auditorium is approximately 4,000 sq ft with seating to accommodate 250 people. The auditorium serves as a lecture hall for meetings, presentations, classes, and briefings. DLAA provided acoustical consulting to provide a high-level of speech intelligibility, audio-video (AV) system design including microphones, speakers, support displays, conferencing, recording, and a large LED wall for presentations. A performance lighting system design to support recording and presentations was also provided.

Our team recently traveled to a confidential client's luxury condominium on the island of Maui to test their floor-ceiling assembly. Using specialized equipment including a tapping machine and loudspeaker, our engineer Zane evaluated how well the building's floor-ceiling construction controls two critical types of noise: footfall noise (the thuds and footsteps from the unit above) and airborne noise (voices, music, and other sounds that travel through the air and structure).

In luxury residential buildings, this matters more than most people realize. House rules and building standards typically require a minimum level of acoustic performance. Meeting that bar is harder than it looks. Test results consistently show that hard floor finishes like hardwood and luxury vinyl tile (LVT) perform significantly worse for footfall noise than carpet.

For high-end buildings where hard floors are increasingly the design standard in Hawaii, that gap has to be made up somewhere. That’s where acoustical treatments come in: resilient underlayments beneath the flooring, suspended ceiling systems below, and fiberglass insulation within the assembly all work together to bring performance up to where it needs to be.

Acoustical consulting during design and post-install testing helps architects, contractors, and private clients make informed decisions before problems and complaints arise.

Last Monday Senior Consultant Scott Petrovits visited a project on Welton street in Denver to perform some sound testing. He performed ASTC (Apparent Sound Transmission Class) and AIIC (Apparent Impact Insulation Class) tests between vertically adjacent residences to verify field performance of the floor/ceiling assembly. Here are few photos of some equipment used during these tests. After gathering the data for these tests our senior consultant will create a report that complies with ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) report standards, or abridged version, depending on client objectives. We specialize in providing reliable on-site testing and analysis tailored to meet each client’s needs.

Last week, DLAA completed final system commissioning for the new addition at the Waukee Performing Arts Center — a major milestone for this exciting project.

DLAA provided full acoustical and theatre consulting services, along with AV, performance lighting, and stage rigging system design. This first phase delivers a brand-new performing arts center addition, with a second phase planned to renovate and repurpose the existing music and auditorium spaces, scheduled to open in late 2026.

The new auditorium features:

- 977-seat capacity

- Full-fly stage rigging system

- Professional-level audio reinforcement and video distribution systems

- LED performance lighting and control system

- Expanded wing space

- Large orchestra pit with elevator

- Improved accessible seating

- Dedicated follow spot platforms

- New concession area

Behind the scenes, the facility also includes larger dressing rooms, expanded costume and prop storage, and a significantly enhanced scene shop — supporting performers, technicians, and staff alike.

Stephanie Adams-Ball served as DLAA’s project manager, with key design contributions from Ben Bridgewater, Chris Evans, Craig Breitenbach, and Joe Chapman, ASTC. We were proud to collaborate with Alec Hoppe, Rachelle Hines, and Brian Bartlett of FRK Architects + Engineers to help bring this vision to life.

We’re excited to see this space support students, artists, and the community for years to come.

DLAA was honored to be invited to join the team to oversee the design and construction of the new facility at Robins Air Force Base in Georgia. Our scope included design services for AV, performance lighting, and acoustics in their new auditorium, along with other supporting spaces. Some of the specifics of the project included a large high-resolution LED wall, supporting displays, and a high-quality sound system. Additionally, the space has performance lighting that will better support presentations, conferencing, and live events.

DLAA was recently on-site to provide testing, tuning, and commissioning services for the sound reinforcement system at Douglas High School. The high school was upgraded with new rigging, lighting rigging, and drapery. Along with a complete update on the front end of the sound reinforcement and projection systems. This theatre serves the High School and the wider Douglas-Wyoming community and will support theatre performances, concerts, graduations, and other community ceremonies.

DLAA is proud to have performed the final commissioning of the new sound reinforcement system at Windsor Academy Charter School's athletic facility. The system included high-performance loudspeakers and subwoofers, bringing the thrill of the game to all attendees. Additionally, the system included flexible zoning for classes and competitions. A sound reinforcement system was installed by Rockfan AVL Production & Integration. DLAA wishes the Windsor Firebirds good luck in the 2026 season and in the years to come.
