Being a traveling superintendent isn't a 9-to-5.

It's weeks away from home, living out of a hotel, and still being expected to run a tight jobsite each morning. Most companies treat that as just part of the job.

NNI doesn't see it that way. The lifestyle is challenging, and so is the expectation that traveling supers should feel supported and connected no matter where the work takes them. The work already takes you away from your family. You shouldn't also feel cut off from your team.

Alex joined NNI as an Assistant Controller when the finance department was built for a $45 million company. Within 14 months, he was promoted to Controller. Then in September 2025, he was promoted to VP of Finance.

Over the last 5 years, he coordinated five software transitions, grew his team from 3 to 7, and helped take the company from $45 million to $115 million in revenue. That kind of growth doesn't happen without nights spent doing the financials after days spent working with new software companies. Alex knows what that stretch felt like, and his team knows he was in it with them.

What Brian (our CEO) noticed was that Alex didn't just hire people to fill seats. He built processes, trained his team well, and kept his door open. What Geoff (our COO) noticed was something a little different: he said that Alex's office is the kind of place you stop by when the day gets heavy, because somehow you leave feeling like the problem is smaller than it was when you walked in.

Now, Alex is redesigning NNI's incentive program and working with project managers across operations to build real financial literacy into how the company runs. It just goes to show that he is a leader who never stops looking for ways to make the day-to-day work easier for the rest of the team.

NNI just made Crain's Best Places to Work list.

This recognition wasn't a nomination or a submission where we wrote about ourselves. That isn't the way it works. Best Companies Group ran an independent employee engagement survey. The team filled it out. Their responses drove this outcome.

Construction isn't an easy industry to work in. Long hours, hard deadlines, and constantly moving pieces on any given week. The fact that the people doing that work every day feel good enough about this place to say so out loud means a lot to us.

NNI held its first Wellness Wednesday.

The team spent the afternoon doing a guided meditation, working through a journal prompt, and talking honestly about stress and ways to relieve it at the workplace. There was a state of the union mixed in, a healthy lunch provided, and some movement breaks. It was an hour designed around the team, allowing them to be present with each other.

Food trucks are great, and they'll be back. But this was a chance to slow down, check in, and give people something more helpful.

The feedback is overwhelmingly positive, so NNI's keeping it going!

Being a traveling superintendent isn't for everyone.

You show up to a jobsite in a new state where nobody knows you yet, and that kind of unfamiliar environment can make some people freeze.

A lot comes at you at once: new crews, new expectations, and the need to lead well. The ones who last aren’t thrown off by that. They take it in, read the room quickly, and adjust without losing sight of how the job needs to run. That’s why we love and value our Supers.

Hayden Nahra was NNI Construction's first intern, and he set a high bar.

Hayden spent the summer with our accounting team working across job cost tracking, variance analysis, and financial close processes. He also played a real role in the data gathering and analysis behind our transition to a new company credit card and travel platform.

Alex Toth, our VP of Finance, put it well: “Watching Hayden grow over the past few months has been genuinely rewarding. He came in willing to learn and stayed that way throughout. That combination, ready to dig in and able to grow, is exactly what you want from someone early in their career.”

We're grateful for the work Hayden put in this summer, and we're rooting for him. We're also looking ahead to the interns who'll follow in his footsteps.

Most companies measure growth by headcount and revenue. Those numbers matter, but they're not the whole picture.

The more meaningful question is, are the people already on your team doing work today that they couldn't do two years ago? Because that's a longer process than hiring to fill a gap. And it means putting team members in situations before they're fully ready for them, because that’s how they learn, from hands-on work.

Developing from within is slower than recruiting someone who already has the experience you need. You carry more risk in the short term, and sometimes, it doesn't work out.

But when it does, you end up with someone who knows the work at NNI, not just the work in general. Someone who's grown into running jobsites in ways that move their own career and the company forward.

Construction is hard on people in ways that don't show up on a schedule.

The physical side is obvious. But the stress of managing a complicated project, holding a team together when things go sideways, and carrying the weight of getting it right takes a toll that's harder to see and even easier to ignore.

That's why we've put real effort into making sure our people have somewhere to go when things get heavy. Not a policy buried in an employee handbook. But real conversations with local leadership who know the work, know the pressure, and can talk honestly without it feeling like a performance review.

But when someone’s running on empty, the difference between talk and reality is whether there’s someone to call and whether they pick up.

We know that the toll of this work is real, and so is our responsibility to make sure people aren't carrying it alone.

Some teams grow fast. NNI grows with intention.

In Q2, NNI has added eleven new team members across the company: Elizabeth Jazbec, Hayden Nahra, Liam Green, Lance Moore, Mike Ghorbanian, Ani Jahaj, Gianna Varanese, Devin Mott, Martin Rinehart, Tyler Sparks, and Katie Babyak.
