New research is revealing a broader proteomic signature of ALS beyond neurofilament alone.

In a new Nature Communications study, Jonathan Glass, MD, and the team at Emory University used NULISA™ Technology to profile neurological and inflammatory proteins in plasma and develop a 10-protein blood signature spanning markers including NEFL, pTau-181, FOLR1, TREM1, and VEGFA.

The signature achieved 98.3% balanced accuracy in an independent validation cohort, outperforming NEFL alone and capturing disease-associated signals that could help distinguish challenging ALS presentations.

By enabling ultrasensitive, multiplex profiling across neurological and inflammatory proteins, NULISA™ is helping researchers uncover biomarker signatures that may otherwise be missed.

New GenomeWeb coverage takes a closer look at Carlos Cruchaga and his team’s recent findings on plasma biomarker changes during lecanemab treatment.

Using NULISAseq™, the team identified 34 proteins that changed significantly during treatment, revealing distinct trajectories across biomarkers associated with amyloid, tau, neuroinflammation, and neurodegeneration.

The GenomeWeb story digs deeper into these findings, including the team’s efforts to investigate biomarkers that could help predict amyloid clearance and further characterize treatment response.

Can proteomics help untangle the overlapping pathologies behind mixed dementia?

A new CLARiTI initiative will use NULISAseq™ Neuro 220 to profile ~21,000 longitudinal plasma samples from 10,000 participants, alongside clinical, imaging, genetic, and neuropathological data.

“We have to disentangle that heterogeneity and see whether we can bring some clarity to it,” says Sterling Johnson of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. By identifying blood protein signatures associated with different neurodegenerative pathologies, the project could help researchers better characterize disease progression and inform future clinical trials.
