Is it bad to run my AC nonstop during a heat wave, or will that burn it out?

Not necessarily.

When Georgia temperatures climb into the 90s, your AC may run for hours without shutting off. That does not automatically mean it is burning itself out. It usually means the system is working hard to keep up with the heat entering your home.

Long run times can actually be more efficient than constantly turning on and off.

But there is a difference between running steadily and struggling.

If your thermostat is set to 74 but the house keeps climbing past 78, something may be wrong. A clogged filter, dirty outdoor coil, low refrigerant, leaking ductwork, or weak airflow can force the system to run without ever catching up.

Start with the basics.

Replace the filter. Keep the outdoor unit clear of grass and debris. Keep blinds closed during the hottest part of the day. And make sure your thermostat fan is set to AUTO.

Your unit was built to sit outside through everything Georgia throws at it. Wrap it up and you trap moisture, which breeds rust. A dry cover also turns into a cozy nest for mice and insects that chew wiring all winter.

And never run the system with a cover on. That chokes the airflow and can overheat it fast.

So when does a cover help? Only in short bursts, like a flat board on top for hail or falling acorns. Cover the top only, leave the sides open, and pull it off before you run the AC.

That fog is condensation, and it means your indoor air is holding too much moisture.

Warm, damp air hits the cool glass and turns to water, like a cold glass of sweet tea sweating in July. With the AC on, that points to too much humidity in the house.

Usually your system cools fast but doesn't run long enough to pull the moisture out.

Georgia humidity does the rest, sneaking in through leaky doors, windows, and ducts.

Quick fix: set your thermostat fan to AUTO, not ON. Left on ON, it blows that collected moisture right back inside.

This Carrier unit has everything it needs to run right for years.

Level pad so the compressor doesn't strain. Clean electrical connections. And plenty of clearance from those plants for proper airflow.

That last part matters more than most people think.

Shrubs too close? Your system works harder. Works harder means higher bills. Higher bills mean a shorter lifespan.

We recommend 24 inches of clearance on all sides. Minimum.

Why is my outdoor unit suddenly loud, rattling, or grinding?

A brand new noise means something shifted. The trick is reading which kind of noise you're hearing.

A rattle usually means something came loose or something got in.

After the storms rolling through Hall County, it's often a stick, gravel, or leaves in the fan cage.

Other times it's just a panel screw that vibrated loose over the years.

A grinding sound is the one to respect.

That's typically metal on metal, usually worn bearings in the fan motor.

Let it keep grinding and you'll cook that motor. A small fix turns into an expensive one fast.

A hard buzzing or humming leans electrical.

A struggling capacitor or contactor makes that racket. A fan blade clipping something will too.

Here's what to do the second it starts.

Shut the unit off at the thermostat.

Running a grinding system just spreads damage to parts that were fine an hour ago.

Once the fan has stopped completely, look through the top grate.

Spot an obvious stick or pile of debris? There's your rattle. Clearing it might solve the whole thing.

Keep your hands out of there until those blades are dead still.

But if it's grinding, clanking, or buzzing with nothing you can see? That's a part on its way out.

Attic installs done right look like this.

That's a full furnace and air handler sitting on a solid plywood platform. Not balanced on joists. Not wedged in a corner where no tech wants to crawl.

See that metal drain pan underneath? If something ever leaks, it catches the water before your ceiling does.

The flexible ductwork is insulated and suspended properly. The gas line is routed safe. The PVC drain is pitched so condensate actually flows out.

And it's positioned right above the attic access.

That matters more than people think. Your tech needs to change filters, check components, do seasonal tune-ups. If they can't reach it, maintenance doesn't happen.

This is what 20+ years of installs teaches you. Do it right the first time. Make it serviceable for the next 15.
