Beckwourth Peak standing proud on the horizon, viewed from the driveway of our recently completed project The Boulders. Nakoma homesites boast some amazing views of the Lakes Basin Peaks to the west, and Smith / Penman / Reconnaissance Peak to the north, but views of Beckwourth are not that easy to come by.

I love Cor_Ten steel as a cladding. We used some on our project Fairway Haven, which you can see on our Projects Page at www.northsierra.com It's a great tool in the "mountain modern tool box" because it's rough and earthy, but is also a low-maintenance, "bulletproof " cladding choice in areas where others might have issues (i.e. areas where snow might accumulate).

Hawkins Architecture designed a modern forest sanctuary for family living, sited on a heavily wooded site in Martis Camp, Truckee, California.

Nakoma's a pretty special development -properties like this (4 acres, stunning views, very private) are not often found in a gated community with golf, resort amenities.

Some interesting thoughts on design. For me home design is pretty simple -a home is a tool. Not unlike a hammer or a backhoe. First and foremost, a tool needs to work. Our "marketing guy" Jamie Bate cringes when I say this, but I like boring floor plans. A "boring" floor plan is one where anyone can walk into the house and instantly know where to take off their shoes, where to find the restroom, where to fetch a cold beer out of the fridge.

Whereas the floorpan is a mostly two-dimensional experience, a home is a three-dimensional reality (and experiencing it adds the fourth dimension of time). Therein is the "fun stuff" -tweaking that "boring" floor plan to match up interior uses with views, creating interior and exterior spaces that you actually want to spend time in.

Even though it's located in Utah, this house makes me think "Nakoma" because it's both mountain-modern and reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Gotta admit I have a weakness for "Corten" weathering steel. We're using some on a project right now -I'll be sure to post photos when it's done. I also love that this a rather edgy, design-forward project in the middle of nowhere and MTB-focused.

A tough shell made of weathering steel clads the Copper Harbor house by US firm Prentiss Balance Wickline Architects, which is set in a "very remote destination with an industrial history".

Pleasantly surprised by how well the drone photography came out on Nakoma's lot 369. The "i-phone-at-ground-level" approach never manages to communicate the feeling of being in the midst of all that beauty. Lot 369 is a bit of a unicorn -very open, sunny, and at the end of a very private cut de sac, and yet tucked in between two fairways.
