Star Formation Winding Down 🌌

The nearby Andromeda galaxy is made up of hundreds of millions of stars, but star formation has been declining for the past 500 million years. Using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope data, scientists measured about 200 million individual stars to learn about the galaxy’s past activity.

What do Little Red Dots and cacti have in common? 🌵

A lower-redshift spiral galaxy nicknamed the “Saguaro” (just like the cactus!) appears to have one of those Little Red Dots seen by NASA James Webb and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope at its center. The two space telescopes are a perfect team with Webb’s infrared and Hubble’s ultraviolet imaging capabilities to find these types of galaxies. Saguaro and other similar low-redshift galaxies will help scientists to learn more about the pathways these dots take through cosmic time.

We're all celebrating a successful launch!

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman visited Goddard yesterday to commend the workforce on the launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, ahead of schedule and on budget. With Roman's deployments running smoothly, the operations team took a minute to visit with the administrator about the mission's progress and future.

While he was here, we couldn't resist giving Administrator Isaacman a peek at some of the current and future exploration under way at Goddard, from state-of-the-art Search and Rescue technology to an instrument flying on Dragonfly, designed to sample the surface of Saturn's moon Titan.

Topsy-Turvy Spiral 🌀

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured an image of spiral galaxy NGC 4654, which is asymmetric. One edge is defined and rich with stars, while the opposite end, which lacks stars, has a long tail of gas stretching out. The galaxy’s asymmetry is due to its high velocity as it travels through space!

As the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope begins its journey, Near Space Network engineers are on console at Goddard supporting the mission through its critical early orbit phases. The network is providing communications and tracking as Roman heads to space.
