The Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association is urging residents and business owners across the region to take proactive steps now to protect lives and property, as Invest 94L—a developing tropical disturbance near Hispaniola and the Turks and Caicos Islands—continues to organize. Forecasters anticipate Invest 94L to potentially strengthen over the weekend into Tropical Storm Imelda, and the Cape Fear Region could start to see potential impacts as early as late Monday into Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, tropical systems like Invest 94L can still cause significant damage in our community,” said Brad Tilyou, President of the Wilmington-Cape Fear Home Builders Association. “But by preparing in advance, homeowners and businesses can reduce the risk to their property and ensure a safer recovery. It’s important to act now—before the storm hits.”
With uncertainty surrounding the storm’s track, intensity, and timing, the Association encourages all residents to use this window to prepare now.
Preparedness Tips for the Cape Fear Region
For the Community:

· Stay Informed: Monitor trusted sources like the National Weather Service and local news. Have multiple ways to receive alerts.

· Make a Plan: Review evacuation routes and designate a family meeting place.

· Build a Kit: Stock up on non-perishable food, water, medications, and essentials for at least 72 hours.

· Prepare Your Home: Secure outdoor items, clear gutters and drains, and plan for possible power outages.

For Businesses & Industry:
· Review Emergency Plans: Ensure continuity plans are up-to-date and include property and personnel protection.

· Communicate Early: Keep employees and key partners informed of your storm response strategy.

· Secure Property: Protect signage, equipment, and vulnerable areas from wind and water damage.

· Backup Data: Safeguard critical business information.

· Check Insurance: Understand your coverage and claims process in advance.

· Work with Licensed Contractors After the Storm
In the event of significant damage, the Association strongly advises working with licensed, reputable general contractors. A vetted list of local professionals is available at www.wilmhba.org, ensuring safe, effective assessments and repairs.
