Some concrete practices become standard because they’ve been done that way for a long time. But do they always hold up in the field?

At this year's Tilt-Up Convention & Expo, our own Sean Brown, PE, SE, joins Bryan Birdwell, FACI, for Concrete Durability MythBusters, a discussion that puts common assumptions about water-cement ratio, reinforcement, slab-on-ground design, and today's evolving material systems to the test. Catch them on October 23 from 10:30 to 11:30 AM in Hall 3 of the Salt Palace Convention Center.

The session will bring engineering and field perspectives together to explore how design decisions can impact placement, finishing, cracking, constructability, and long-term performance.

For the Excellerate Warehouse project in El Paso, the goal was to find a reinforcing solution that could eliminate rebar without compromising long-term pavement performance.

We worked with Jobe Materials to develop a fiber and mix design using FiberForce® 750 that met the project requirements while addressing concerns around long-term cracking. The result was approximately 440,000 square feet of sidewalks and concrete paving, totaling 10,000 cubic yards of concrete.

By removing rebar from the design, the project team was able to simplify placement, reduce costs for the owner and deliver a more durable pavement system around the facility.

Project partners include ARCO, Midwest Concrete and Jobe Materials.

Fiber reinforcement can help reduce transportation emissions before the concrete even reaches the jobsite.

Because fibers are lightweight and compact, they require fewer truckloads than bulky steel reinforcement. Fewer deliveries can help simplify logistics, reduce jobsite traffic and lower transportation emissions along the way.

This Avondale, Arizona, project put several of our solutions to work for Premier Underground’s new facility.

We supplied FiberForce® 750, DuraForce® (t) and 15 MIL VaporForce across the mechanics building, warehouse and two-story office, supporting approximately 4,000 cubic yards of concrete.

Thanks to Continental Concrete and Rock Solid for being part of the project.

Cement, concrete and asphalt get used interchangeably all the time, but they’re doing very different jobs.

Cement is the binding agent that helps hold everything together, while concrete is the finished material made from cement, water, and aggregates. Asphalt is another paving option, although around here we tend to prefer the one that’s built for greater durability and long-term performance.

We may be a little biased, but when the goal is to build it once and worry less about what comes next, we’ll take concrete.

As for asphalt, we’ll just say future maintenance appreciates job security.
