There will be a lot of out of town roofing companies swarming our local areas after today's storms. Navigating an insurance claim is complex and filing a claim can count against you, even if it is not approved. Keep a few items in mind as you navigate getting damage assessments to your property.
1. If damages to your property are causing additional damages such as water infiltration, contact a local company to perform temporary repairs and mitigate further damages. Do not sign a contract for permanent permanent repairs to be completed at this time. Out of town companies often use the desperation to stop further damage to get a signed contract.
2. You have time, do not buckle from a High Pressure out of town salesman trying to convince you that you have to do something right now and sign a contract with them today!
3. Insurance companies are tracking the storms and have data of winds speed, hail size, etc. Often, these out of town companies tell you they will have their Public Adjuster or specialists get you approved. Again, you have time! Do not let an out of town company tell you that they are the only ones that can get you approved or have a better rate of approval. You may be giving them an additional 10% that you do not need to be paying. They have nothing special that a local company doesn't have!
So if you haven't noticed the theme here, you have time!!! Do not let an out of town company rush you to make a decision you may regret.
What to do after the storm:
1. Walk your property and your surrounding area. Take pictures of any notable damage, trees down, dents in metal, damage to vehicles, etc. This is important and will assist in your claim.
2. Contact a local company you trust to perform an initial inspection!
-Most out of town companies knocking on doors are just sales people and have minimal experience or qualifications in determining if your damage warrants a claim. They will be gone in a few months so they don't care if your claim is denied.
3. Get a full inspection report with estimate and supporting data from the company inspecting your property. These items will assist when it is time to speak with your agent. Most out of town companies are out for volume and will not go the extra mile to provide a detailed inspection report.
