Historic buildings carry stories worth preserving and adapting them for continued use takes thoughtful engineering.

Engineering is all around us, even on the playground.

At STEM School Highlands Ranch ’s Career Discovery Day, our team’s “Engineering at Play” booth helped students connect engineering to their own school’s new playground, a project Calibre supported through civil engineering.

We were happy to spend time with students, share our experiences, and offer a closer look at where an engineering career might lead. Opportunities like these are a meaningful way to give back to the communities we serve, and help make future possibilities feel a little more tangible.

Working in an active hospital takes careful coordination and a shared understanding that patient care comes first.

For our seismic evaluations at the Nashville Medical Center, Calibre is working with GDM Architects and Engineers to investigate two existing buildings while coordinating access around ongoing healthcare operations. Our team is assessing building systems, identifying seismic deficiencies, and developing conceptual retrofit recommendations.

The findings will support informed decisions about future improvements, helping the VA strengthen the facilities that Veterans, staff, and families depend on.

Caring for our communities takes many forms, including an afternoon picking up litter together.

The Calibre team gathered at Paintbrush Park in to help clean up the open space. We’re grateful for opportunities to spend time together while caring for the places that bring our community outside.

We had a great time at the Annual Conference, sharing work our team has been thinking through in the field, in design, and alongside the communities these projects serve!

Stephanie Caulk and Trevor Igel presented When Water Outpaces Warning, exploring how rapidly rising water can threaten essential infrastructure, and how floodplain management, capital planning, and emergency coordination can help communities prepare.

Trevor also helped share construction lessons from the Jackass Gulch Channel Restoration Project, including what it takes to turn a drainage channel into a more resilient community amenity.

Bryan Grotz examined the hidden waterways beneath Indiana State Road 135, where karst features called for careful evaluation during culvert replacement design.

Julia Giddens presented lessons learned from modeling hydraulic surf features, sharing what the team learned about the methods and key parameters used to model in-river surf waves.

And Emily Villines brought people together as a panel moderator.
