A little HVAC history for your Tuesday :)
Benjamin Franklin invented a better stove in 1742, and he refused to patent it. At the time, most homes were heated by open fireplaces, which sent the vast majority of their heat straight up the chimney while drawing cold drafts across the floor. Franklin’s design, a cast-iron stove set into the fireplace opening, radiated heat into the room and used a clever system of baffles to route the smoke through a longer path before it exited, extracting more warmth along the way.

The first version actually didn’t work very well. The smoke path was poorly designed, and it tended to fill rooms with fumes. A Philadelphia ironmaster named David Rittenhouse later redesigned the flow of air and smoke, and that improved version is the one that really caught on.

Franklin was offered a patent by the governor of Pennsylvania, who was impressed by the invention. He declined, writing in his autobiography that since he had benefited from the inventions of others, he should be glad to serve others with his own. Because of that choice, anyone was free to copy and sell the design, and variations of what became known as the “Franklin stove” spread rapidly across the colonies and beyond.
