St. Louis International Airport recently remodeled the ceilings of the passenger check-in area in all four terminals. International Cellulose’s SonaKrete Acoustical Finish was chosen for several reasons. First and foremost is SonaKrete’s excellent noise absorption ability, which dramatically reduces reverberation or echo time.

SonaKrete’s Arctic White color provides a light reflectivity of 81%, which brightened the spaces considerably. Because SonaKrete can conform to just about any shaped surface, its application would not change Minoru Yamasaki’s domed design. SonaKrete is a spray-applied, hand-trowelled, premium finish that eliminates the popcorn look of other sprayed acoustic products.

SonaKrete may also qualify for multiple LEED Credits. SonaKrete provides an NRC of .65 at only ½” application. This achieves a lower installed cost than traditional 1” thick, sprayed acoustic plaster systems. The two standard colors of SonaKrete are White and Arctic White; however, virtually any custom color is available.

Ted Moudis Associates, a leading architect and design firm, recently headed the new Corporate Headquarters for Footlocker in New York City. The 145,000 sq ft project housed offices and meeting spaces in an open-plan design featuring exposed ductwork and conduit.

The finished product was so impressive that the project was awarded “2017 Commercial Interior Project of the Year” by the CoreNet Global New York City Chapter.

For an efficient and functional open-plan office, acoustical treatment is critical. Without adequate acoustical finishes, hard surfaces and materials, which reflect sound, will produce echo, reverberation, and excessive noise, decreasing functionality and occupant comfort. At the Footlocker Headquarters, K-13 White was applied at 1” thick to over 75,000 square feet of the building as an ideal noise solution. Unlike hard surfaces and materials, K-13 absorbs excessive noise, making speech and music more intelligible, while enhancing overall sound quality. Additionally, the natural texture of the material fits their design objectives perfectly.

Originally built in 1924, Highland Park Town Hall recently underwent a major renovation and restoration project by RPGA Design Group Inc. Prior to this project, the town hall had received numerous renovations throughout the years. This had resulted in a complex campus that lacked connectivity between departments and adequate accessibility for residents. RPGA Design Group Inc. applied its vast knowledge of master planning and historic restoration to address these limitations while preserving the original Spanish Colonial Revival design objective and details like the iconic domed tower.

Typical of Spanish Colonial Revival style, the original interior consisted of virtually all hard surfaces. This created an acoustical challenge, as hard surfaces reflect sounds, degrading speech intelligibility and decreasing productivity. To address this challenge without compromising the design objectives, the RPGA Design team selected SonaKrete Premium Acoustic Finish for the ceilings of the public corridors and council chambers. SonaKrete absorbs excessive sounds rather than reflecting them, improving speech intelligibility and enhancing ambient sound quality. Spray-applied and hand-trowelled, SonaKrete provides a smooth, plaster-like finish perfect for the aesthetic the designers wanted to preserve.

In addition to its acoustic performance, the application enhances light reflectivity and highlights the stunning craftsmanship and ornate details. This project has ensured that the Highland Park Town Hall will remain a functional and beautiful part of the community for many more years to come!

K-13 Gray was chosen for the parking area at Big Tex Storage in Houston, Texas. The application called for a product that could withstand Houston’s humid air conditions, while
preventing excessive thermal exchange between the conditioned storage areas above and the parking area below.

K-13 utilizes a patented adhesive system that provides a strong, durable bond to virtually any substrate, including concrete, metal, wood, glass, Styrofoam, and urethane. K-13 is available in seven standard colors and integral custom colors.

Coming straight from Europe, the first US Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel is right in the heart of the Windy City as the newly risen star of Chicago. To describe it as opulent is an understatement. The original consideration was to use one of those very smooth European fiberglass panel/acoustic plaster systems to control the reverberation in the extraordinary 12,041 sq. ft. Atlantic Ballroom with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over Lake Michigan and the magnificent Chicago skyline. That was until the exorbitant cost estimates came in. Shiner+Associates, Inc. recommended 3/4” of trowel-finished Arctic White SonaKrete as an equal product with an NRC of .75, at a fraction of the cost, and with absolutely no compromise in aesthetics.

SonaKrete is trowel-finished after it is sprayed, making it ideal for architectural spaces where a more refined aesthetic is required. With this troweled finish, it is almost unrecognizable that there is an acoustical finish at all.

Converse Inc. World Headquarters, built in Boston at Lovejoy Wharf, is a gorgeous example of what can be achieved with adaptive reuse in design. Jennifer Carpenter, architect, cleverly repurposed a building constructed in 1908, the same year Converse was founded, into a massive ten-story open-plan office for the company’s 600+ employees. This project added two stories to the historic building, effectively increasing the space to over 240,000 square feet and allowing for ample office space, showrooms, a materials library, and even a yoga studio for their employees.

Acoustical absorption is imperative to effectively convert an existing industrial building into a functional open-plan office. A theater is undoubtedly one of the most sensitive areas to treat acoustically. Associate Architect Eric Smith knew from the start that SonaKrete™ would probably be the product of choice for Xavier Hall. “One of the really great advantages of SonaKrete™,” says Eric, “was ICC’s ability to match Benjamin Moore’s Pittsfield Buff color.”

Lincoln Berry, Cavanaugh Tocci’s associate, said, “This was an interesting renovation project. The space was originally well-designed, though in poor condition. The SonaKrete product allowed the architect to maintain the original 'look’ of the ceiling areas and provided the acoustical absorption that we required. When we consider treatment options for a project, we typically offer multiple choices for our clients. The Stožice Arena is a multi-purpose indoor arena located in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Designed by Slovenian Sadar Vuga d.o.o. architects, it is the largest indoor arena in the country and home to basketball club KK Olimpija. The arena features a shell-shaped dome, which creates an enclosed setting in a mostly open-air space. To prevent energy loss escaping, a 2” application of K-13 in Black was spray-applied directly to the ribbed metal decking.

The application of K-13 provides thermal control, enhancing energy efficiency. K-13 also provided much-needed acoustical control for the many events the arena hosts by reducing reverberation and enhancing sound quality for the venue.
