The gymnasium at F.W. Holbein in Mount Holly, NJ, recently underwent a transformative renovation project by RYEBREAD Architects. In order to control excessive noise, echo, and reverberation, which would otherwise be prevalent in an environment of this type, SonaSpray “fc” Dura-K in Arctic White was utilized for the ceiling of the gymnasium.

Spray-applied to the existing cementitious wood fiber panels, SonaSpray “fc” Dura-K serves as a durable, exposed interior finish. With an installed bond strength over 800 PSF, the combination of SonaSpray “fc” Dura-K provides unmatched durability and exceptional acoustic performance. Additionally, this application of SonaSpray “fc” Dura-K in Arctic White provides high light reflectance to optimize natural daylighting and promote brightness throughout the space.

Coming straight from Europe, the first US Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel is right in the heart of the Windy City as the newly risen star of Chicago. To describe it as opulent is an understatement. The original consideration was to use one of those very smooth European fiberglass panel/acoustic plaster systems to control the reverberation in the extraordinary 12,041 sq. ft. Atlantic Ballroom with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over Lake Michigan and the magnificent Chicago skyline. That was until the exorbitant cost estimates came in. Shiner+Associates, Inc. recommended 3/4” of trowel-finished Arctic White SonaKrete as an equal product with an NRC of .75, at a fraction of the cost, and with absolutely no compromise in aesthetics.

SonaKrete is trowel-finished after it is sprayed, making it ideal for architectural spaces where a more refined aesthetic is required. With this troweled finish, it is almost unrecognizable that there is an acoustical finish at all.

Central Station has been serving rail passengers in Memphis, Tennessee, for more than 100 years. Opened in 1914 and referred to as Grand Central Station until 1944, the location became the centerpiece of the “South Main Street” neighborhood through the first half of the Twentieth Century, highlighted by the Spirit of New Orleans’ daily trip between Chicago and the Crescent City.

With passenger train service declining following World War II, the location fell into disrepair during the next two decades. Today, following a second massive renovation, the Central Station Hotel is again helping to revitalize the South Main Art District just south of downtown.

The historic Memphis music scene was incorporated into the 123-room hotel. “Acoustics was a major consideration,” says architect Chad Evans of Bounds & Gillespie Architects, a lead designer on the project. With daily train service running adjacent to, and in some places directly above, the occupied spaces of the hotel, SonaKrete was chosen to solve the acoustic challenges and allow the architects to apply a finish in tune with the original Roman Doric design. Just 3/4” of SonaKrete in white for the Grand Hall and custom Iron Ore for the bar and The Listening Lounge were applied to achieve the desired 0.75 NRC.

With a bond strength of over 500 lbs per square foot, a Class 1 Class A fire rating, and a troweled finish, SonaKrete fits the budget and design goals perfectly.

DLL’s office in Wayne, Pennsylvania, serves as a dynamic workspace for its employees, featuring open-plan areas designed to foster collaboration and communication. However, such open environments often present acoustical challenges, including increased noise levels and reverberation, which can hinder productivity and concentration. To address these issues, DLL had SonaSpray ‘fc’ acoustic insulation in a specially matched custom color applied to the office ceilings.

SonaSpray ‘fc’ is a spray-applied acoustical finish that effectively absorbs sound, reducing reverberation and ambient noise. This application creates a more comfortable acoustic environment, enhancing speech intelligibility and overall employee well-being.

The Museum of Natural Curiosity in Lehi, UT, is a distinct, barn-shaped structure that was designed by FFKR Architects. The two-level, 40,000 sq. ft. facility features hundreds of hands-on, interactive learning exhibits and is the newest addition to the Thanksgiving Point complex.

In order to create a wide-open space, filled with large exhibits, a unique roof system of steel and timber was utilized. The roof system gives the museum its distinct appearance while providing necessary structural support. The museum’s extensive use of glass windows provides visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, which blend seamlessly into the interior.

However, with the high ceilings and the hard surfaces, acoustical treatment was essential. K-13 was selected and spray-applied to the unique ceiling. K-13 absorbs echo, reverberation, and excessive sound, which would have otherwise been prevalent in a space of this type, without
compromising the architectural details and design. K-13 was produced in a custom color manufactured specifically for the project. In addition to acoustic performance, K-13 provides high thermal value, which helps to reduce the museum’s environmental footprint.

Van Buren Elementary School is believed to be the first public school in Idaho to earn LEED Certification (Silver). Part of the certification involved the lighting design. The building is V-shaped and oriented to the east to capture as much sunlight in the classrooms and library as possible. This included leaving out the drop ceiling to make the ceilings higher.

International Cellulose’s Sonaspray “fc” was a key part in the lighting design. In addition to providing an NRC of 0.80, the Arctic White color has a light reflectivity of 81%, which helps brighten the rooms even more. Sonaspray also contributes in three LEED categories, recycled content (80% postconsumer), low VOC content adhesives (

The BJ’s Wholesale Club Support Center in Boston is a modern workspace with open-plan design and collaborative areas that, while promoting teamwork, create significant acoustic challenges. Expansive open spaces, high ceilings, and hard surfaces contribute to noise from discussions, phone calls, and office activity, leading to distractions and reduced productivity.

To address this, K-13 acoustic insulation was spray-applied at a 1” thickness to the 166,300 sq ft ceiling. This cellulose-based material effectively absorbs sound and reduces reverberation, creating a quieter and more focused work environment. K-13 also provides thermal insulation, helping regulate temperature and improve energy efficiency.

Pernod Ricard produces and distributes a wide variety of distilled beverage brands worldwide. Pernod Ricard’s Amsterdam office is located at the NDSM Wharf—a creative community built out of the industrial remnants of Amsterdam’s once thriving shipbuilding industry. The office was designed by VASD, who effectively preserved the original character of the building while converting it into a functional office environment.

Materials used for the office include polished concrete, exposed ductwork, and glass, balanced with organic accents. In order to control excessive noise, prevalent in a space of this type, K-13 Gray was applied to the ceilings throughout the office. Unlike hard surfaces and materials, which reflect sound, K-13 absorbs echo and reverberation. The application of K-13 makes speech more intelligible, controls background noise, and increases overall sound quality.

In addition to acoustic performance, K-13 provides thermal value while complementing the industrial design objectives and color palette.
