What if the future of space exploration starts in a classroom? Through NASA HUNCH, students take on real aerospace challenges and build skills in design, engineering, communication, and problem-solving, right now. This is what happens when curiosity meets real work, and students see they do not have to wait to help build the future. 🚀

Why might your favorite meal taste different in space?

In microgravity, a dulled sense of smell can change how food tastes, which makes every meal part of the challenge. Through NASA HUNCH, students get hands-on experience exploring food-related problems tied to spaceflight and real-world innovation. What food would you want to see redesigned for space? 🚀

Would another astronaut hear you if you shouted on the Moon?

Not without a communication system. In space, sound needs a medium like air or water to travel, and the vacuum doesn’t give it one. What other “normal on Earth” rule do you think changes in space? Share your thoughts below 👇 🚀

What problem would you solve for astronauts? Safer tools, cleaner systems, smarter routines, more comfort in space. This is where innovation starts. Drop your idea in the comments and tell us what you would design. 🚀

How do you drink water when there’s no gravity to make it flow? 💧

Astronauts can’t simply pour water into an open cup aboard the International Space Station. In microgravity, water doesn’t fall downward the way it does on Earth. Instead, astronauts use specially designed drink containers with straws and valves that help control the water and keep it from floating away.
It’s a great example of how the space environment changes something we normally take for granted.

That same kind of observation is at the heart of NASA HUNCH. Students are challenged to look closely at how an environment changes a problem, then use design, testing, and problem-solving to develop a solution.

What would you redesign if you had to use it in space? Share your idea with us.

Your first prototype isn’t supposed to be perfect.

In NASA HUNCH’s Design & Prototyping program, students build, test, redesign, and explain each decision along the way, because real engineering means learning from what didn’t work the first time. What’s something you’ve learned by testing an idea that needed another try? Share your thoughts below 👇

What if your next classroom project started with a challenge NASA actually needs solved?

This is what happens when students take on real missions: they design, prototype, test, and present ideas in engineering, software, biomedical science, culinary, flight configuration, video, and media. Talk with your teacher and explore NASA HUNCH to see how your school can get involved. 🚀

What happens between the first sketch and something that works? In NASA HUNCH, students test, rebuild, and refine real solutions for space exploration, gaining hands-on experience with NASA and aerospace partners along the way. This is what happens when curiosity meets meaningful work, across 38 states and more than 3,000 student-built items flown to space. 🚀
