Our Modesto team found a way to make a routine part of excavation work safer: entering and exiting an excavation.

On the City of Modesto’s River Trunk Realignment – Pump Station Project, workers use ladders to access excavations. The team focused on creating a protected path to those ladders at the edge of the excavation.

They repurposed old forms into walking platforms, added handrails and positioned them to guide workers from outside the barriers directly to the ladders.

The solution is now being used at multiple locations across the project, helping crews reach the ladders more safely.

Great work by our Modesto team for putting a practical safety solution into action!

What happens when you put 70 engineering students in charge of real-world construction decisions?

They discover there's a lot more to pile driving than what's in a textbook.

Shimmick's Shawn Ho**er recently brought his industry expertise to UC Davis, giving 70 engineering students a firsthand look at the challenges and real-world decisions behind pile driving and shoring.

From geotechnical reports to unexpected field conditions, students got a taste of what contractors navigate every day.

The impact? Nearly 30 students engaged with the Pile Driving Contractors Association (PDCA) about membership following the session!

Who let these characters into the office? 🎃

Halloween brought out a different side of our Shimmick teams this year! From creative costumes and plenty of treats to a few unexpected guests at our Northwest Quarterly Operations Meeting, our people found ways to mix a little Halloween fun into the workday.

And judging by these photos, some took the assignment more seriously than others. 😂

We didn't just show up in Boise. We made ourselves at home.

From conversations at our booth to an evening with Women in Mining Idaho, Shimmick made the most of the Idaho Mining Conference!

We teamed up with Holland & Hart LLP to sponsor the Women in Mining networking event, creating another opportunity to connect with the people driving the industry forward.

If phishing emails were that obvious, they’d be a lot easier to spot. 🎣

Instead, they can look like an invoice from a supplier, a drawing to review, a document to sign, or a request to update banking information. In construction, those requests are part of a normal workday - which makes it easy to miss when something isn’t quite right.

Lisa Dunkin, Shimmick’s IT Director, has a simple reminder: pause, verify, and report. If a request seems unusual, check with a known contact using information you already have, and ask IT if you’re unsure.

“Our clients trust us not only to safely build their projects, but also to responsibly protect the information they give us,” Lisa says.

This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, remember that protecting project information is a team effort. One extra moment to check can make a difference.

The iconic Santa Monica Pier sign has officially come down! 🌴🏗️

Today, Shimmick and Yesco crews successfully lifted the 20-foot neon arch from its longtime home at the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier and carefully lowered it to the ground.

The removal marks a significant step in the City of Santa Monica - Government's Santa Monica Pier Bridge Replacement Project, which will replace the aging Colorado Avenue Bridge with a wider, more accessible structure designed to serve the community for generations to come.

Next stop for the famous sign? A trip to Las Vegas for refurbishment before its eventual return to Santa Monica.

Preserving a piece of history while making way for the future. Great work by our Santa Monica team on this milestone!

Now that’s how you show appreciation. 🌯

Our Murray Street Bridge crew received a special surprise last week when City of Santa Cruz Public Works Director Nathan Nguyen stopped by with breakfast burritos for the entire team and WSP.

The gesture was a thank-you for the crew’s hard work in reaching major project milestones, and it meant a lot coming directly from the City.

Building strong partnerships goes beyond the work happening on the jobsite. It’s moments like these that remind us what makes a great project team.

Thank you to Nathan and the City of Santa Cruz for taking the time to recognize our crew. The breakfast was a hit, but the thought behind it meant even more.

The sun was shining on us in Seattle—and we made the most of it.

Last week’s ENR Seattle Infrastructure Forum brought together public agencies and industry leaders to discuss the region’s infrastructure investments, upcoming projects, and opportunities for collaboration.

After the forum, we co-hosted Infrastructure Unplugged with BUILDIT, Atlas, and Cordoba at the Fog Room. Representatives from WSDOT, Sound Transit, Seattle City Light, and the Port of Seattle joined us for an evening of great conversations with the Seattle skyline as our backdrop.

Thank you to ENR, our co-hosts, and everyone who spent part of their day—and evening—with us. There’s a lot ahead for the region, and we’re glad to be part of the conversation.

Put a group of Shimmick and Axia Electric project managers in one room, and there's no shortage of opinions, project stories, or ideas.

Our project management leaders recently gathered in Southern California for two days of training, collaboration, and candid discussions about how we can continue improving project performance and achieving Shimmick's strategic goals.

The team tackled topics ranging from safety, financial performance, and contract management to strengthening client relationships, solving challenges in the field, and helping identify and win future work.

With experience spanning different projects, markets, and delivery methods, the group brought valuable perspectives to the table. The focus now is on putting those ideas into practice, strengthening how we work together, and delivering better outcomes for our clients.
