⚡ Co-op Time Capsule ⚡

In the 1960s, Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative, Inc. was helping usher in a new era of electricity in south-central Missouri. Four local K-8 schools became “all-electric,” using electricity as their sole power source.

To celebrate, Howell-Oregon outfitted the schools’ basketball teams with warmups and matching shorts. Each proudly displayed the school’s all-electric status, while a Willie Wiredhand patch on the sleeve represented their connection to the electric cooperative.

One of those uniforms belonged to Ridgeview R-6 School near Pomona. After the school closed, a bright red warmup jacket was sold at auction and eventually found its way to electric cooperative journalist Richard Biever, who spent years tracing its history.

More than 60 years after it first took the basketball court, the jacket and matching shorts have finally returned home. This spring, Richard donated them back to Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative, where they were framed and preserved as a piece of cooperative history.

Another small piece of history showing how Missouri’s electric cooperatives have powered their communities in more ways than one. 🏀⚡
