Even though the event is not freezing rain. When cold rain hits the top of the heat pump the air coming out of the heat pump will be below freezing. and will immediately freeze on the grill. Do not try to defrost the grill you can cause damage. The defrost cycle will not defrost the top grill. Turn the heat pump off. switch to emergency heat at the thermostat.

Look like according to forecast. Saturday evening until Monday morning will be the freezing rain event
Heat pump owners will be faced with the top of the outdoor unit to freeze up. A cover of ice will form over the top of the outdoor unit. Stopping the Heat Pump from moving air across the coil rendering the Heat Pump useless. And the possible damage to the outdoor unit if you continue to running it during this ice event.
I recommend turning the Heat Pump off at the thermostat by switching to emergency heat or auxiliary heat .
Heating with emergency heat will cost more in electricity. Damage to your outdoor unit will cost much much more.
