Flooding 101: Do you know your floods?
Understanding the different types of floods can help you stay safe, informed, and prepared.
💧
Flooding is an excess of water on land that is normally dry. There are three main types of flooding: riverine, shallow, and coastal.
💧
Riverine (aka fluvial) When floodwaters overtop the bank of a river and flow into the floodplain.
🌧
Shallow (aka pluvial) Occurs when water from a heavy precipitation event (rain or snowmelt) has nowhere to drain, accumulates faster than the ground can absorb, or overwhelms a stormwater management system.
🌕
Coastal high tide (aka sunny day or nuisance flooding) Occurs in low-lying areas along the tidal shoreline during a full or new moon at certain times of the year. High tide flooding is increasing in frequency and severity due to sea level rise.
🌊
Coastal storm surge. When strong winds drive tidal water onshore during severe storms such as hurricanes and nor’easters. Flooding from storm surge is increasing as sea level rises and major storms become more frequent and severe.

Be a community scientist: Capture and share flood events…when it is safe to do so. MyCoast NY is a community science program collecting photos of flooding and storm damage throughout New York. Your contributions support research and preparedness efforts.
