As a log homeowner or a restoration specialist yourself, you might have asked the question, "Why should I use corn cob instead of glass or sand blasting?" We’ll, here we’ve got your answers. For World Environment Day, we wanted to highlight some of the best reasons to use this environmentally-friendly, nontoxic material to prep a log home for a transformation.
Corn cob, when used for media blasting a home, is grounded from the cores of the cob. After drying, it can be placed in a cob blasting machine, where the pressure and the amount of media used can be adjusted depending on the specific job type.
Because it is made of ground corn cob core, the leftovers of this material are biodegradable and non-toxic for humans and wildlife, as it can be broken down into the earth and reabsorbed.
Unlike sanding or glass blasting, the larger and more absorbent particles can also pick up excess oil or dirt that comes off the logs. It is still dusty, but less so than glass or sand, and far more gentler.
Because of this, the logs end up more absorbent due to the way the stripping happens from the particle size, leading to better stain absorption (better UV protection, less of a chance it will need to be reapplied, and overall a more even color).
Of course, corn cob blasting may not work for every situation and every job, but these are all big reasons as to why our crew uses this method at LHRS!!

Stain Transformation! 🖌️ The Weatherall Dark Brown stain paired with the Western Tan chinking color transformed this grandiose log home with a new classy & inviting look. What a difference! Our team gave this log home a fresh coat of stain alongside restorative work to keep it looking new for years to come.

Our restoration packages come with a lot of bonuses! This particular restoration outside of pressure washing, cob-blasting, staining, included a replacement of the caulking and chinking, with an application of bug-repelling borates and UV-protective clear coat to the exterior. Throwback Thursday! 🪃

We’re reminiscing about a restoration we did last May on a beautiful lakeside log home in Beaver Island, MI. Tap the photos to see our progress. The travel was well worth the effort--our crew did a fantastic job!

Our crew took a road trip from Lafayette, IN, and ended their trip at the ferry to reach the island through Lake Michigan. Look at the “Caribbean” blue in those backgrounds! ⛴️

We quickly got into the restoration process, doing what we do best here. Corn cob blasting, staining, masonry work, and all the little repairs we do in the background to keep the home looking and feeling brand-new for years to come. That stain really shines in the transformation! Such a lovely log home!

Did you know? Woodpeckers can cause lots of damage to log cabins and homes. It may appear cosmetic, but the holes can cause structural issues down the line. Spring brings a lot of animal activity, including birds and the insects that attract them. It’s important to be on the lookout for damage to your logs during these warmer months.
