How long should a furnace really last in a Michigan home?

A properly installed residential furnace is designed to last 15 to 20 years. When they fail sooner, the problem is often not age or brand. It is that the system was never set up or verified to operate the way it was engineered to.

Furnaces must be sized correctly for the home, matched to ductwork that can move enough air, and installed to manufacturer specifications. When shortcuts are taken, the system may still run, but it operates under constant stress. That leads to uneven temperatures, rising energy bills, and premature failure.

Safety and performance are confirmed through multiple measurements, not just turning the heat on. Combustion analysis, temperature rise, and airflow testing are some of the most important checks, but they are only part of a larger process that ensures the furnace heats the home safely and evenly without overheating or underperforming.

Two homes in Lapeer, Michigan can have the same furnace installed the same year and get very different results. The difference is rarely the equipment. It is whether the system was properly designed, installed, tested, and verified at the end.

Understanding this helps homeowners make sense of why some furnaces quietly last decades, while others struggle from day one.

Your HVAC system is designed to move a specific amount of air. Static pressure is like blood pressure in the human body. When pressure rises, everything works harder.

The blower motor is the heart. The ductwork is the arteries.

When a filter becomes clogged, airflow is restricted and static pressure spikes. Modern blower motors try to compensate by working harder to maintain airflow. That extra strain leads to higher energy use, hotter motor temperatures, uneven heating and cooling, and premature motor failure.

This problem gets even worse in homes with undersized or poorly designed ductwork. Tight ducts already create resistance. A restrictive or dirty filter pushes the system past its limits.

That is why filters are always the first thing we evaluate. Not just whether one is installed, but what type, how dirty it is, and whether it matches the duct system and equipment. Most breakdowns do not start with a bad furnace. They start with bad airflow.

Great review from Lisa... "Greg was very knowledgeable and friendly. Bud’s Heating and Cooling is who we will use every time. Holland Heating and Cooling installed our furnace and it’s been repaired by them multiple times. Greg explained why it needed this repair and how it shouldn’t need multiple ones. The owner of Bud’s Heating and Cooling even took the time to return our call on New Year’s Day and scheduled our repair for the next day. That is very impressive."
