From water-intensive cooling to water-smart infrastructure 💧

For years, the Andre Agassi Clubhouse gym struggled with an outdated swamp cooling system that consumed significant amounts of water, damaged gym flooring, and limited access to a critical community space during the hottest months of the year.

To address the challenge, WaterStart partnered with the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada, and Bonneville Environmental Foundation in partnership with Google to install one of the first ultra-efficient air rotation units in the Las Vegas Valley.

The result?
✅ Approximately 829,000 gallons of water saved annually
✅ Full summer access to the gym restored
✅ Elimination of moisture-related flooring damage

Now serving as a demonstration project for other community facilities, the installation highlights how innovative technologies can conserve water while strengthening community infrastructure.

Thank you to the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development - GOED for including WaterStart in their upcoming Nevada the Entrepreneurial campaign!

Last week we had the opportunity to talk about how WaterStart helps support water tech companies, connect innovation with industry needs, and strengthen Nevada’s growing entrepreneurial ecosystem through collaboration.

We look forward to seeing this campaign, which will kick off this summer, spotlight the voices helping shape Nevada’s future.

Thank you to Dr. Brian Wham for welcoming the WaterStart team to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory during our recent visit to Reno.

As a research division within the College of Science at UNR, the Nevada Seismological Laboratory operates a statewide network of seismographic stations and studies the size, frequency and distribution of earthquakes throughout the region.

We appreciated the opportunity to tour the facility, learn more about its important work, and connect with Dr. Wham on the science and innovation helping us better understand Nevada’s dynamic environment.

As the Western U.S. faces an unprecedented drought, discussions continue over the future of the Colorado River.

Emergency federal water actions are boosting Lake Powell but reducing flows to Lake Mead, raising concerns about record lows.

On the City Cast Las Vegas podcast, Southern Nevada Water Authority General Manager John Entsminger breaks down why agreement on cuts remains so difficult under today’s climate conditions.

WaterStart is sharing this discussion as part of ongoing dialogue around water innovation and resilience in the Colorado River Basin.

The data center landscape is moving quickly, making it challenging to stay updated on statewide activities.

That’s why last week, WaterStart and the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development convened more than 30 stakeholders representing 15 organizations in Reno for a statewide conversation on data centers and sustainable growth.

The workshop brought together leaders from regional economic development agencies and utility providers to build a shared understanding of current activity that will inform existing policies and lay the foundation for future responsible development.

Each RDA shared challenges, local perspectives, and valuable insights on the future of data center growth in Nevada, highlighting the importance of coordination, infrastructure planning, water and energy considerations, and proactive strategies that support both economic development and long-term community resilience.

Thank you to everyone who participated and shared valuable input, including the Desert Research Institute. We appreciate your partnership as these important conversations continue.

A big thank you to the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance for inviting WaterStart to present to their business development team yesterday!

We appreciated the opportunity to share more about our mission and explore how we can work together to support sustainable economic growth in Southern Nevada. From advancing a WaterWise economic framework to better aligning incentives for water-saving technologies, it’s clear there’s a growing focus on water-smart economic development.

We also highlighted how companies can tap into WaterStart’s network to pilot and validate innovative solutions right here in Nevada. Looking forward to continued collaboration ahead. 💧

From spreadsheets to real-time insights 💧

Australian water provider Seqwater manages water allocations across seven irrigation districts, relying on complex, Excel-based processes that are time consuming and prone to human error.

To solve this, WaterStart supported a pilot project connecting Seqwater with Water Ledger to test a more efficient, future-ready approach.

The result?
✅ Balance response times cut from up to 30 minutes to under 2
✅ Statements delivered in days, not weeks
✅ Greater accuracy, transparency, and system-wide decision-making

Now live in two districts, Seqwater is planning a staged rollout of the Water Ledger water accounting system to its remaining districts.

Nevada is quickly emerging as a global hub for data centers—bringing economic opportunity alongside important questions around water and energy use.

Our partners at Desert Research Institute have released a new report, ‘Data Center Water and Electricity Consumption in Nevada,’ exploring both sides of that growth.

Developed by WaterStart board member Dr. Sean McKenna and research scientist Erik Henzl, the report will help inform policymakers and the public on this rapidly evolving sector.

Explore key insights:

Nevada is one of the fastest growing data center regions in the U.S. and globally. This offers both opportunities and challenges.
