For more than a century, 1330 Bardstown Road has been part of Louisville’s story, and today, it serves as STW’s Louisville home base.

Originally built in 1900 as a firehouse serving the growing Highlands neighborhood, the building housed generations of Louisville firefighters before earning its place on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Historic Firehouses of Louisville. This space is a reminder that great buildings can continue serving their communities in new ways across generations.

Its story continues today as STW carries forward a small piece of Louisville history in the heart of the Highlands.

For Pulaski County Schools’ Burnside Elementary, energy efficiency was a major priority for the project, which led our team to pursue a geothermal HVAC system early in the design process.

Designed to support collaborative learning and long-term performance, the facility features flexible educational pods, a multifunctional cafeteria, a storm shelter, LED lighting solutions, and Net Zero Energy Achievable status. The geothermal HVAC system and high-efficiency lighting solutions help reduce energy consumption, lower long-term utility costs, and simplify maintenance by eliminating traditional heating and cooling towers.

These system choices also support the district’s sustainability goals by improving indoor environmental quality and delivering more consistent comfort for students and staff, while creating a durable, future-ready facility designed for long-term performance.

The Little Sandy Correctional Complex project involved constructing two new housing facilities, each with 208 Bed units. The updated design improves efficiency, meets modern standards, and supports both medium- and maximum-security requirements.

Key systems include a Geothermal Water Source Heat Pump System with 104 vertical wells, Direct Digital Controls with secure-area ventilation, two 900 kW diesel generators with a 7-day fuel supply, energy-efficient LED lighting, and an addressable fire alarm system integrated into the existing network.
