Congratulations to Gabe Bruguier (Assistant Professor, UNL Libraries) and Kathy Johnson (Emerita Professor, UNL Libraries) and their fellow authors (https://rootsofjusticene.org/writers/) on receiving the Nebraska Center for the Book's 2026 Nonfiction Reconciliation Award (https://nlcblogs.nebraska.gov/ncb/2026/08/31/nebraskas-2026-book-award-winners-announced/) for Roots of Justice: A History of Race and Racism in Nebraska (https://rootsofjusticene.org/). The award recognizes outstanding books with a Nebraska connection that contribute to the state's literary and cultural landscape. The winners will be honored during the Nebraska Celebration of Books on November 14 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln City Campus Union (https://bookfestival.nebraska.gov/2026/index.aspx).

Published by Zea Books in 2025 (https://digitalcommons.unl.edu/zeabook/170/), Roots of Justice brings together a diverse group of scholars, historians, and community leaders to examine the history of race and racism in Nebraska. Through chapters on Native American, African American, Latino, Asian American, and refugee experiences, the book explores how historical inequities continue to shape the present while encouraging readers to envision a more just and inclusive future. Gabe authored the chapter “Native Americans I,” and Kathy served on the Roots of Justice Steering Committee and did extensive research and editing of the bibliography.

Gabe and several authors will also be discussing their chapters as keynote panelists for the upcoming Nebraskan’s for Peace 2026 Annual Peace Conference, “Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future" (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1jGfZjYEmilDo3TZbJUUauQIvOtrJCs_UzL5OGNoeT8Y/viewform?edit_requested=true&pli=1)"

Congratulations! The seventh grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) in support of the Nebraska Digital Newspaper Project has been awarded to principal investigator Laura Weakly, metadata encoding specialist in the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities (CDRH).
The award amount for the 2026 cycle is $324,932 and the grant to digitize 100,000 pages officially begins on September 1. Some of the newspapers under consideration for digitizing include the South Omaha Stockman and Nebraska’s World War II-era Prisoner of War camp newspapers, including Lagerzeitung, Der Scheinwerfer, Springbrunner, and others.
