What if more of the money we spend on heating could stay right here in New England?

The Energy Action Network reported that rising fossil fuel prices added an estimated $160.4 million to the region's purchasing costs for gasoline, diesel, and fuel oil between March and June 2026. That is money that could have supported local families, businesses, and communities.

Heating oil is imported into the US, so much of the money spent on it leaves the state. Its price is shaped by global markets, international supply chains, and events happening far beyond our communities.

Wood heat offers a more local option.

Vern and the Franklin Northeast Supervisor Union found the answer through strategic partnerships.

The result? They cut the project cost by more than half.

The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is now accepting applications for the Advanced Wood Heating Assistance program.

With up to 50% reimbursement of project costs, to a maximum of $50,000,
this program can help public buildings pursue a heating solution that is efficient, low maintenance, and connected to local resources.
