Entire 2nd floor house remodel completed (3 bedrooms and 2 full baths plus a hallway). We did the 1st floor a couple years ago and it was time to do the other half. Master bath had everything replaced including the walk in shower. Family bath had everything replaced except the tub and surround. Both bathrooms had ceiling mounted vent fans installed and vented to outside of the home. All new windows in every room complete with jam extensions and trim. Drywall in every room repaired to be like new. Every door and door k**b replaced to match the 1st floor. Every room had the ceiling and walls painted (except master bedroom). All trim was replaced with new all wood trim including shoe mouldings to match the 1st floor and painted to semi-gloss white finish. Lifeproof flooring in every room including the new tile look in the bathrooms. We even repainted the old black handrails at the top and bottom of the stairs and replaced the heat and cold air return registers.

We have been incredibly busy this winter so we haven't had much time to post photos but here is one of the jobs we recently completed. Complete bathroom over haul which included changing out the tub and surround with a walk-in shower and integrated seat. We added recessed lighting (with nightlights) and a lighted mirror to bring this bathroom up to 2026 styling. The only thing that remained from the original bathroom was the shelving on the wall over the toilet.

Due to ongoing cold winter weather, we have received a very high number of calls regarding ice dams. Here is some facts for you to consider:
1. Most ice dams ARE NOT a roofing issue and are usually not covered under any warranty.
2. They form due to lack of proper insulation and/or ventilation.
3. Ice and water shield (a sticky roofing membrane put under the roof shingles) will not prevent ice dams but will protect the first 3-6' of the roof.
4. If you have large icicles hanging off your gutters, you probably have an ice dam forming.

So before you call someone who is going to charge you insaine prices, here is what you do to get rid of an ice dam or stop a current leak. The only safe way to deal with an ice dam is to safely use a roofing snow rake to get off any snow from on top and around it (avoid getting on the roof if you can). Throw calcium chloride (the white pet friendly rock salt) on top of it including in the gutter. Avoid using rock salt as that will damage the algae protection that many of the newer shingles have on them. DO NOT for any reason use anything to chip away the ice as you will damage the shingles which will cost you a lot more money than just melting it away. If you have a wet spot on your ceiling, DO NOT try to poke it with your finger or an object unless the ceiling is sagging due to a large water build up. You will take a simple repainting job and make it into a much harder repair and repaint job. If you must punch a hole, use a 1/2" drill bit and drill it in the lowest area. You shouldn't need to replace drywall that is still flat on your ceiling but you will need to replace sagging sections. Flat drywall will dry out on its own leaving a darker brown stain in its place. Most wet insulation will dry out and be safe. Mold will only form on fiberglass insulation if its got organic matter on it or it remains wet due to a regular year round leak (which is a roofing issue). Use a stain fighting primer (such as Kilz) on the area and paint the ceiling.

Once the weather improves, contact an insulation company so they can assess your home for the proper insulation. Many homes have enough insulation but lack baffles at the eves so they don't allow air to move from the soffits to the peak. Contact a sider if you need venting added to the soffits (see picture). If you have small circle vents under your eves (lower roof hangover), vacuum or blow them out. Often the little ones get clogged from dust and debris rendering them useless. Consider properly installed heat cables on both your roof and in your gutters if ice dams are a regular issue. Repairs to damaged drywall should wait until all the ice is gone from the roof and the cause of the heat loss/ventilation issue has been fixed unless there is a safety issue.

Call us at 585-825-0402 if you have any questions or concerns regarding ice dams. WAKE Construction does not remove ice dams but we do repairs due to water damage.
