Northern Virginia called. It would like its normal humidity back.
You could explain that HVAC systems are designed around local climate conditions, but when temperatures and humidity hit extremes, even a healthy system may have a harder time maintaining the exact indoor temperature homeowners are used to.
Here are some helpful tips:
🏡 Turning your thermostat WAY down won’t cool your house faster.
Setting it to 65° when your house is 78° doesn’t give your AC a turbo button. It’ll cool at the same rate, it may just run longer trying to reach an unrealistic temperature.
Your AC is fighting humidity, not just heat.
💦 Part of your system’s job is pulling moisture from the air. That’s why a 74° house with high humidity can feel significantly less comfortable than a 74° house with properly controlled humidity.
🥵 Running constantly during extreme heat doesn’t automatically mean something’s wrong.
When Northern Virginia starts cosplaying as the Amazon, longer cooling cycles can be normal. The bigger red flag is when the indoor temperature continues climbing or the system isn’t producing cool air.
🌬️ Ceiling fans don’t actually cool the room.
They cool you by moving air across your skin. Leaving every ceiling fan running while no one is home isn’t helping your AC keep the house cooler.
🚿 Your dryer, oven and even hot showers are adding to your AC’s workload.
On the hottest, muggiest days, everyday activities can introduce additional heat and humidity into the house. Shifting laundry, cooking and long showers away from peak afternoon heat can give your system a little help.
