It’s always a pleasure to do work on old growth woodwork. This dining room at Castle Hill Inn was in poor shape and covered heavily from cigarette smoke from its years as a bar room. Like many structures in New England of that age, the use of butternut with oil and shellac provided a beautiful glow. Our team removed the old bar, restored the paneling it’s reclaimed butternut, and the finish team went to work with many gallons of denatured alcohol and fine steel wool to clean it up. It allowed us to remove the old dirty finish without disturbing the patina of the wood. Fresh amber shellac and wax brought it back to life.

Normandie, an iconic Newport property, is getting some great exterior restoration. The port cochere roof was removed, cleaned, and reinstated and the walls got a fresh coat of limewash. The gates? Well they speak for themselves. Covered in paint for years, we stripped them down to discover the original linseed oil varnish which we recreated. The old growth oak was in great shape overall. We are elated and proud to have received the 2022 Doris Duke Preservation award!! It was great to be in Rough Point for the occasion too. Our thanks to the city of Newport, NRF, and our team of craftsmen and women who made it possible. Historic restoration is our heart and soul, and we couldn’t do it without you!! For those of us who love restoration and rehabilitation this is the second best thing aside from turning the property back over to the client. We catalogued every single piece of trim, doors, windows, and hardware. Once the mechanical work and insulation was done we get to the precision carpentry. Our team will reinstate the components perfectly and then the finish experts will apply Fine Paints of Europe satin enamel to it. This place will be epic!!
