We're putting the wraps on the Hoodlebug Trail Pedestrian Bridge in Indiana County. Come mid-June, pedestrians and bicyclists will have a smooth new crossing over Route 22 and drivers will have a beautiful new bridge to admire. Shout out to the Merlo team for another project delivered on schedule.

We showed you an overview of how we moved the temporary Acrow bridge downstream in 16 hours last week at our Boynton job in Somerset County. Let's talk about the lift.

Safely lifting a 210,000-pound 38-foot-wide-by-100-foot-long temporary bridge is no joke. We worked from plans that detailed every aspect of the pick, from the rigging capacity to the angle of the lifting cables.

The actual lift was done by two 550-ton cranes positioned on each side of the bridge. A tandem lift was done on both the removal and resetting of the bridge.

Pulling off a massive lift safely is all about having a detailed plan and preparing for every contingency. Hats off to everyone at Merlo and PennDOT District 9-0 that made this effort a success.

How long does it take to relocate a temporary bridge and reopen it to traffic? For Merlo, it was only about 16 working hours.

We shut down SR 219 on Friday at 10 a.m., moved the bridge downstream, reassembled it, paved, installed guiderails, painted lines, and reopened it to traffic by 12 noon on Saturday.

Why did we relocate this temporary bridge? The new location will keep two lanes of traffic open on SR 219 as we start building a permanent single-span bridge under a separate contract.

All in a day's work for the hard-working crews at Merlo...

2026 Construction Safety Week (May 4-8) coincides with the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. We gave all Merlo superintendents an in-depth information packet so they could conduct a Safety Stand-Down Toolbox Talk on Preventing Falls and other hazards.

This year's headline, “All In Together,” is centered around three pillars: RECOGNIZE, RESPOND, and RESPECT to build a unified call to action on high energy, high hazard work to prevent serious injuries and fatalities.

Keeping our team safe is job one. While we're glad to take advantage of this opportunity to bring safety into the spotlight, we also know that it needs to be a focus 24/7/365.

PennDOT has awarded Merlo the Caledonia Pike Bridge in Elk County, Pa. The bulk of our work will include removing an existing two-span structure and replacing it with a three-span bridge upstream, in addition to full depth paving of a new alignment.

The 2026 construction season is off to a strong start for Merlo!
