Before you choose a single finish, make a list of everything that lives on your counters today: the coffee machine, the toaster, the knife block, the charging cables, the mail.

That list decides how many doors your kitchen needs and what goes behind each one. In our showroom every front hides something on purpose, and that is why the room stays calm.

Choosing a cabinet finish from a small door sample is a bit of a leap of faith.

A sample shows you color and texture, but not what that finish does across a whole run of cabinets. A dark wood that feels warm in your hand can feel heavy on a full wall of tall doors, and a bold blue can turn calm once it lives only on the island.

That's what our new DOCA Kitchen Visualizer is for. Pick real DOCA finishes and handles, mix them across the wall, base, tall and island cabinets, and see the whole kitchen change. When a combination feels right, save it as a design board and bring it to our Mountain View showroom to see the actual doors in person.

Narrow it down at home, then decide with the real samples in hand.

Most kitchen projects start long before the first meeting, with a lot of late-night browsing.

We rebuilt artistickitchen.com for that part. You can look through finished Bay Area kitchens by cabinet line, see how DOCA, Wood-Mode and Crystal differ, try DOCA finishes on a real kitchen in the visualizer, and meet the designers you'd work with. When you're ready, you can book a free showroom experience right from the site.

Which part would you explore first?

What should you take away from a showroom visit? Ideas you can use at home.

Snap a photo of anything that stops you, then notice why it works: the material, the proportion or the light. A paneled fridge or a waterfall edge can be adapted to most layouts, and our designers can show you how each one would fit your space.

Bring your favorites to your first design meeting and the conversation starts in the right place.

Which of the five would you steal first?

Thinking about a two-tone kitchen but worried it will feel busy?

Keep the contrast to one piece. In this kitchen the perimeter stays in soft white Crystal cabinetry and only the island changes to white oak. The veined stone runs across both, and the brass pulls repeat on every door and drawer, so the whole room still reads as one design.

When the island is the only piece that changes, the kitchen gets warmth without feeling split in two.

Would you go two-tone, or keep it all one color?

Why does a finish look different in the showroom than it did on your screen?

Light. Wood veneer, lacquer and glass all react to the light around them, so the same sample can read warmer by a window and cooler under recessed lights. That is why it helps to see DOCA finishes in person at our Mountain View showroom, side by side, before anything is ordered.

Choose your finish under light that is close to your own kitchen.

Which would you start with: wood, lacquer or glass?

Next time you walk through a showroom, look at the gaps around the cabinet doors before you look at anything else.

Inset cabinetry sets every door and drawer inside the frame, so the spacing around each one is always on display. In this kitchen the Wood-Mode cabinetry keeps that line even from the glass-front uppers down to the deepest drawer. It's a big part of why the natural wood feels so calm in all that window light, and it's the first thing we point out when someone asks us about inset.

Even gaps are one of the quickest ways to read how well a cabinet is built.

What's the first thing you notice when you walk into a kitchen?

Have you ever walked into a kitchen that felt slightly off and could not say why?

It is usually a line that breaks. A drawer that stops a little short of the door beside it, a gap that widens toward the floor, a handle set a touch higher than its neighbor. None of it is a flaw you would point to, yet your eye catches every one.

These lines are settled on paper, long before installation. So before you order cabinetry, ask to see the elevation drawings, the straight-on views of each wall, and trace the lines with your finger. A line that works on the drawing has a far better chance of working in the room.

What is the first thing your eye goes to in a kitchen?

What do you check first when you see a European kitchen in person?

Photos show you the color and the layout, but they can't tell you how a door closes or how a drawer feels when it's full. So when you visit, open everything. Look at the inside of the cabinets as closely as the fronts, run a hand along the edges, and notice where the lighting is built in instead of added on.

Those are the details we walk through with DOCA cabinetry at our Mountain View showroom, because they're the ones you'll live with every day.

Custom cabinetry is something you should get to touch before you choose it.

Which would you open first, the pantry or the drawers?

Ask any Eichler owner what worries them about a kitchen remodel, and lighting comes up fast.

With no attic above, the ceiling is the roof, so there's nowhere to hide extra cans or ductwork. In this Eichler, the light comes from skylights overhead and from strips tucked into the toe kicks below the walnut DOCA cabinetry. The tongue-and-groove ceiling and exposed beams stay clean and uninterrupted.

Planning an Eichler kitchen? Ask early how the lighting plan will work without an attic.

What would you keep from your Eichler's original design?
