Well, winter is finally showing up, and my neighbor Tom and I have been talking quite a bit about getting out snowmachining and keeping some of our local trails groomed this year.
I’ve been wanting to build a trail groomer for a long time, but like most of my projects, I wasn’t about to go spend a bunch of money on something I could probably build out of scrap metal and questionable engineering decisions. 😂
Well, the other day I finished a project for a guy, and he gave me a bunch of 1-inch square tubing. FREE MATERIAL! That’s usually all it takes to get another project rolling around in my head.
So Tom came over, we looked at a few different groomer designs online, and I ended up coming up with my own design. It’s about 7 feet long, nice and compact, and light enough that one person can handle it without needing a chiropractor or a helicopter rescue.
We got it all welded up, took it out for a test run, and I’ll be damned, the thing works absolutely amazing! Sometimes my redneck engineering actually works out better than expected. And nobody got hurt, which is always a bonus. 😂
The best part? We built this thing with material I already had laying around and the free steel I picked up. A little shop time, some welding, and a couple of Alaskans with too much time on their hands.
Here’s a few pictures and videos of our homemade trail groomer in action.
Now we just need Mother Nature to quit screwing around and dump some serious snow on us so we can get out and start grooming trails!
Nothing quite like an Alaskan winter, a warm shop, free steel, and two guys who probably should’ve been supervised. 😂
Bring on the snow! ❄️🇺🇸
