Some flaws cannot be seen with the naked eye, but the right inspection method can make them visible.
In this demonstration, we’re using a Parker magnetic yoke to magnetize the inspection area. When magnetic particles are applied, they gather around areas of flux leakage, revealing surface and slightly subsurface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials.
Magnetic Particle Testing is a fast, reliable, and nondestructive method commonly used to inspect welds, castings, forgings, and other critical components.

Great insights from one of our Responsible Level III, Megan.

At Industrial Inspection & Consulting, we believe non-destructive testing is about far more than meeting specifications, it's about protecting people, products, and reputations.

The greatest value of NDT is often invisible. It's the defect found before a product reaches a customer, the failure that never occurs, the downtime that's avoided, and the confidence manufacturers have in the quality of their products.

One of the hardest lessons I've learned has nothing to do with the technical side of NDT.

It's learning how to communicate its value.

If you've been in this industry long enough, you've probably experienced it. A new company acquires yours, or new leadership comes in with a mandate to reduce costs and eliminate waste.

They start asking questions:

"Do we really need this inspection?", "Can we reduce the scope?", "Is there a faster or cheaper way?"

Early in my career, I would have answered those questions with standards, specifications, and customer requirements. Those things matter, but they're not always what leadership is really asking.

They're asking: "Help me understand why this is worth the cost."

The reality is, they don't see what we see. They don't see the defect that never reached the customer. They don't see the failure that never happened. They don't see the customer relationship that was preserved because an inspector made the right call.

They see the cost. We see the value.

That doesn't make them wrong. It means they're looking at the business from a different perspective. Over time, I've learned not to defend NDT.

I explain it.

Instead of leading with the specification, I explain the risk we're managing. Instead of saying, "We've always done it this way," I explain what could happen if we don't.

Those are two very different conversations.

Our jobs as Level III’s isn't just to ensure technical compliance. It's also to help leadership understand the value behind what we do. Because if we don't explain that value, NDT can easily be viewed as just another expense. When we do, it becomes what it has always been, an investment in quality, reliability, and the company's reputation.

Can you guess what we CT Scanned?

Recently, Industrial Inspection & Consulting had the opportunity to CT scan a Psittacosaurus skull, a dog-sized dinosaur that lived approximately 100 million years ago.

Our high-resolution CT scan revealed bone striations, tiny tooth cracks, hidden restoration work, and clearly separated the fossilized bone from the surrounding rock matrix, all without damaging this remarkable specimen.

While this project involved a prehistoric fossil, the same non-destructive CT technology is used every day across industries including : aerospace, automotive, medical devices, batteries, additive manufacturing, plastics, and precision machining, to detect internal defects, verify assemblies, measure complex internal features, and validate product quality without cutting apart valuable components.

At Industrial Inspection & Consulting, we enjoy helping support the next generation of engineers.

Recently, we had the opportunity to assist Michigan Tech Racing after one of their competition race cars experienced an off-track incident that resulted in damaged wheels. Using our industrial CT scanning technology, we were able to non-destructively inspect the rims to determine whether they remained structurally sound.

CT scanning allows us to examine both external and internal features without cutting or damaging the part. We evaluated the wheels for:
• Impact-related damage and hidden dents
• Linear defects and crack indications
• Porosity
• Pitting
• Hot tears
• Other discontinuities that could compromise structural integrity

This type of inspection provides valuable information for engineering teams making critical repair or replacement decisions, while saving time and preserving the component.

Insight from our Responsible Level III - Megan Davey.

Lessons from a Level III – Part 1

When I first became a Level III, I thought the hard part would be interpreting indications or creating techniques.
I was wrong.

The hard part was learning to recognize when outside pressure was starting to influence my own thinking. I've learned that pressure itself isn't the problem. Production schedules aren't the problem. Customers wanting answers aren't the problem. Wanting to help isn't the problem.
The challenge is recognizing when those things begin influencing your technical judgment.

Over time, I've developed a habit when I catch myself thinking about schedules, shipping dates, overtime, rework, or disappointed customers, I stop. Because none of those things are acceptance criteria.

I've seen techs talk themselves into "borderline acceptable" more than once, when a second look would have told a different story. That's how the pressure actually works, not as a demand, but as a nudge toward the answer everyone's hoping for.

I write it up as I see it. The part gets rejected. Shipping calls again. It's not the outcome anyone on the floor wanted that Friday, but it's the correct one, and a week later nobody remembers the delay. They remember whether the part was right.
Then I remind myself of something I think every Level III eventually learns.
The specification hasn't changed. The indication hasn't changed. Only the pressure has.

Integrity isn't tested when the answer is the easiest to notice. It's tested on a Friday afternoon, under a magnifier, with the phone ringing. Holding the line in that moment is what integrity actually looks like, not a value on a spreadsheet, but a decision made when it would have been easier not to. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my career, and it's one I wish someone had shared with me when I first became a Level III.

Case Study: Inspecting Microfluidic Mixers with Industrial CT Scanning

Microfluidic devices contain complex internal channels and features that are nearly impossible to inspect using traditional methods without cutting or destroying the part.

Can you inspect a collectible without opening it?

We recently used our industrial X-ray/CT scanning technology to examine a sealed, collectible original iPhone while keeping the packaging completely intact.

For high-value collectibles, condition and originality matter. Our non-destructive inspection allows us to look beneath the surface to help verify:
• The phone is present inside the original packaging.
• Internal components appear consistent with an original device.
• The serial number and identifying markings can be viewed when accessible.
• There are no obvious signs of internal damage or tampering.
• The packaging remains unopened and undisturbed.
