Yesterday's Saratoga Straights Price Is Right Challenge had 48 participants guessing what Saratoga Straights Premium 2x4 104-5/8 ESLP #2 was selling for one year ago.

🥁 THE ACTUAL PRICE: $498.33/MBF FOB MILL!

🏆 Congratulations to Nathan Vaughn of Builders FirstSource!

Nathan's guess of $500/MBF earned him a custom-made American flag crafted from genuine Saratoga 2x6 lumber. 🇺🇸

And a big shoutout to our runners-up, who both guessed $495/MBF!

🚨 WATCH OUT! THERE'S A NEW SCHEME IN TOWN!

We spend a lot of time watching lumber prices, market trends, and freight rates.

But there's another market we need to keep an eye on...

THE CON MARKET!

Freight scammers are finding ways to make fraudulent transactions look like legitimate business.

They may pose as dispatchers, brokers, or trucking companies, using company information and professional-looking paperwork to gain access to loads.

And here's the scary part...

The lumber can arrive at its destination, but the carrier that actually delivered it may never get paid.

It's called unauthorized double brokering, and it's a serious risk for everyone involved.

🚩 RED FLAGS TO WATCH FOR:

❌ Email addresses that don't match verified company contacts.

❌ Company paperwork with inconsistent addresses, phone numbers, or other details.

❌ Different rate confirmations for the same load.

❌ Requests for quick payment or unfamiliar banking instructions.

❌ Dispatchers or brokers whose authority to handle the load hasn't been verified.

❌ Insurance information that doesn't match the equipment or operation being represented.

DON'T ASSUME THE PAPERWORK IS LEGITIMATE JUST BECAUSE IT LOOKS OFFICIAL.

Take the extra few minutes to verify who you're doing business with.

Whether you're a mill, lumber trader, customer, broker, or carrier, we all have a responsibility to protect the integrity of our industry.

Keep up with the lumber market. But don't forget to keep up with the con market!

🪵 The lumber market found rock bottom, rejected the quote, and asked what was underneath it. 😂

Sawdust Signals – Issue #14: Lower Prices. Fewer Excuses is out!

Remember when a ridiculously low lumber quote would get a buyer's attention? Now it gets a polite, "Thanks. Keep me posted."

Apparently, shock and awe has become shrug and delete.

📉 November lumber futures broke through the previous $515 contract low, touching $511, down $145/MBF from July's high.

Mills are looking for orders, buyers are waiting for the bottom, and trucking is making sure nobody gets too comfortable.

And those curtailment rumors? A strongly worded group text isn't a production cut! 😂

Here's the problem with waiting for the perfect bottom: Lumber doesn't send out invitations when it's ready to turn.

The mill that's been calling you six times a day might suddenly remember how voicemail works!

The takeaway? Lower prices don't automatically make better deals.

Cover what has a customer. Counter on what needs a home. Protect the hard-to-replace items, and make sure the freight doesn't eat your lunch.

🪵 Doctor’s orders: NO HEAVY LIFTING. Apparently, lumber buyers got the same memo! 😂

Sawdust Signals – Issue #13: The No-Heavy-Lifting Edition is out!

Tyrone’s still operating with one good arm, and judging by the lumber market, buyers aren’t interested in carrying anything heavy either—especially inventory!

📉 Six of Utah Lumber’s eight Market Averages moved lower this week. KD Studs led the decline at $20/MBF, followed by Southern Pine at $15/MBF.

November lumber futures are flirting with their October lows, housing permits are softening, and sellers are still looking for buyers willing to make a move.

The takeaway? Buy the requirement, not the recovery story.

There are opportunities out there, but a bargain isn't a bargain if you can't move it, sell it, or make a margin on it.

One good arm is enough to point at a bargain. It isn't a reason to carry the whole pile! 💪

🪵 Sawdust Signals is running a little behind this week. Apparently, publishing a lumber market report with one functioning arm is harder than selling lumber to a buyer who's "just checking the market." 😂

After my third shoulder surgery on my dominate side, I've discovered that the lumber market and I have a lot in common: limited upward movement, plenty of resistance, and nobody's quite sure when we'll recover. 📉💪

But the sawdust is still flying folks and the show must go on!!

The latest edition of Utah Lumber's Sawdust Signals is finally here—delivered a little late, slightly battered, but still full of market intelligence, pricing trends, and the occasional smart-ass observation.
