WHY WE CHOOSE UTAH LUMBER: Patrick MacDonald

“I wanted the freedom to build my business—without doing it alone.”

When Patrick MacDonald established with Utah Lumber in January 2026, he already had 10 years of experience in the lumber industry. What he was looking for was something different.

He found it in Utah Lumber’s partnership model.

Patrick describes the decision best:

“What initially drew me to Utah Lumber was the lack of the cold, corporate feel you often find in this industry. From day one, it was incredibly clear that ownership genuinely cares about you as a person, not just a number on a spreadsheet.

Joining the partnership model without a draw was a massive leap, but having the autonomy and freedom to operate my business under the company umbrella made all the difference.

On top of that, the depth of product knowledge among the other traders here is incredible. Having that level of expertise to lean on, combined with a supportive, family-oriented culture, has created the perfect environment for me to confidently grow and elevate my book of business.”

Patrick’s story gets right to the heart of what we’re building: experienced lumber professionals running their businesses with independence while having the knowledge, resources, and people around them to help them grow.

That’s why Patrick chooses Utah Lumber.

One of the fun projects we completed earlier this year was creating these custom Utah Lumber hardwood clipboards for our 2026 Trade Agreements.

Were they necessary? Probably not.

Did we love them anyway? Absolutely.

At Utah Lumber, we appreciate quality craftsmanship, and these clipboards felt like a fitting way to present the agreements that help build and maintain our business relationships. They're practical, look great, and represent who we are as a company.

Sometimes it's the little details that make people smile.

🪵 Welcome to the clearance aisle — just don’t assume everything has the same sticker.

Sawdust Signals – Issue #6: The Clearance Aisle Edition is out.

After FIVE weeks of falling down the stairs, a few items finally found the landing. Low Grade is still looking for the handrail.

All eight Utah Lumber Market Averages moved lower again, but the market is becoming far less uniform. Low Grade continues to take the hardest hit, while selected wides, structural products and other hard-to-replace items are holding their ground.

The takeaway: The broad headline matters less than the actual tally in front of you.

Bid aggressively what has to move. Cover what’s difficult to replace. Wait where the seller still hasn’t caught up to today’s market.

Bid. Cover. Wait.

Office #3 is officially open! 🌲

Utah Lumber is excited to announce the opening of our newest office in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, in partnership with Sawtooth Lumber Products.

Our Myrtle Creek location expands Utah Lumber’s presence in the Pacific Northwest and puts our team alongside Sawtooth’s operation, inventory, and experienced crew.

And yes, those empty offices in the pictures are there for a reason. 😉

We’ve got an office waiting for you.

If you’re an established lumber professional ready to scale your book of business and partner with Utah Lumber, let’s talk.

You’ve already built the relationships and the business. Our goal is to help you take it further with Utah Lumber’s resources and support behind you, including purchasing power, logistics, market intelligence, operational support, and access to a growing network of mill and supplier partnerships.

You bring the book. We’ll help you build what comes next.

Thank you to Donnie and the entire Sawtooth Lumber Products team for helping make Myrtle Creek another home for Utah Lumber.

Three offices strong and still growing. 🌲

Why We Chose Utah Lumber

We're proud of the team we've built, and even more grateful for the people who choose to be part of it.

Today we're sharing a few thoughts from Frank Forward, who joined Utah Lumber in February 2026 and brought with him 42 years of industry experience.

“First and foremost, what matters most to me is the people I choose to partner with, and Tyrone and Valerie are stand-up people.

As a veteran trader, I appreciate that Tyrone is fair, direct, and operates without hidden agendas. Communication is straightforward, expectations are clear, and there are no gray areas. That level of transparency is something I value tremendously.

The systems at Utah Lumber are intuitive and easy to use, but what really stands out is the support. If you ever need help, someone is always willing to step in and assist. There is a genuine team mentality here that makes a difference.

Beyond business, Tyrone and Valerie went out of their way to make both my wife and me feel welcomed and comfortable from day one. That speaks volumes about the type of people they are and the culture they've built.

Utah Lumber has earned a strong reputation in the industry, and the group of traders assembled here are professionals I genuinely enjoy working alongside. I'm proud to be part of the team.”

🪵 The counteroffer is back.

After months of a strong lumber market, buyers are finding real negotiating opportunities again—but that doesn't mean every item is following the same path.

This week's Sawdust Signals – Issue #5: The Counter Culture Edition looks at falling cash prices, futures finding some support, the return of meaningful counters, and the products that remain difficult to replace.

The takeaway: Use the leverage that's available, but don't assume waiting automatically means buying cheaper.

Bloody Marys, brunch, and building partnerships. 🌲

Our open house at Sawtooth Lumber Products was a great day, but what stood out to us most was the team behind it.

We cannot say enough about Donnie and the entire Sawtooth crew. From helping us prepare and set everything up to welcoming guests and jumping in wherever they were needed, this team showed up in every possible way.

They work hard, they take care of each other, and they genuinely understand what it means to be part of a team. And, of course, every great crew needs someone keeping everyone in line. Sawtooth has their very own "den mother," Terri Tanner, who somehow manages to keep everyone moving in the right direction while making it all look easy. ❤️

And then there was Donnie...

We put his award-winning Bloody Mary recipe to work, and it definitely lived up to its reputation. Between Donnie's Bloody Mary bar, an incredible brunch spread, plenty of Utah Lumber and Sawtooth swag, facility tours, and a warehouse full of industry friends, we couldn't have asked for a better day.

This event was meant to celebrate the growing partnership between Sawtooth Lumber Products and Utah Lumber, and spending the day alongside their team reminded us exactly why we're so excited about what's ahead.

Great partnerships aren't just built between companies. They're built between people.

Thank you to Donnie, Terri, the entire Sawtooth team, and everyone who stopped by to spend the day with us.

Brunch. Bloody Marys. Building stronger partnerships. 🌲🤝

UVLA, you knocked this one out of the park. 👏🌲

We attend a lot of industry events throughout the year, and we know how much work goes into pulling off a great one. This year’s UVLA event was exceptionally well done.

From the golf tournament and activities to the venues, hospitality, and all the details in between, everything felt thoughtfully planned and well executed.

There are a lot of people working behind the scenes to make an event like this happen, and they deserve some recognition. Thank you to the UVLA leadership, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who contributed their time and energy to making the event such a success.

Utah Lumber was proud to be there supporting it.

And since we’re sharing pictures, we have to sneak in one little Utah Lumber brag...

🎯 Valerie Konecny brought home the Women’s Accuracy win at the UVLA Golf Tournament!

Congratulations on a fantastic event, UVLA. You set the bar high this year!

🪵 Futures made the round trip. Cash got the memo.

This week's Utah Lumber Intel: Sawdust Signals has a pretty clear headline: all eight categories in our Utah Lumber Market Averages moved lower again.

Buyers have more leverage on common 2x4, 2x4-9 studs, Low Grade/Economy, Southern Pine #2 and prompt Green DF 2-inch.

But don't mistake a broad correction for a universal liquidation.

Selected KDDF wides, MSR & SS, fingerjoint studs and scarce 4-inch Green DF remain much harder to replace.

And after spending time with mills, wholesalers, distributors and other industry partners at UVLA last week, one thing became especially clear:

There isn't one lumber market right now. There's the market you see based on the position you're carrying.
