Road base is generally used underneath as the foundation of the driveway. It contains a mix of crushed stone and smaller material that can compact down and create a solid base.

Driveway gravel is generally used as the surface layer.

If you're building a new driveway, the base is important. If you're repairing an existing driveway that already has a good base, you may only need additional surface material.

Not sure how much gravel you need for your driveway?

Before ordering a truckload, you need three measurements:

Length × Width × Depth

For example, a driveway that is 50 feet long and 12 feet wide is 600 square feet. If you're putting down 4 inches of material, you'll need roughly 10–11 tons, depending on the material and how much compaction you get.

It's always better to have a little extra than to come up short in the middle of the job.
