Today we celebrate Will Ratliff as the July Miner of the Month! Will has been with Excel Mining for over 10 years and remains a critical part of our workforce. From bossing to bolting, there’s nothing in the mine Will can’t do and do well! A natural leader, Will heads up our outby crews to ensure the projects he’s a part of get completed correctly and on time. Congratulations to Steve Thacker, Shuttle Car Operator on the 005 Section, for being selected as our Coal Miner of the Month!

Steve comes to work every day with the right attitude and is someone the crew knows they can count on. He works safely, takes pride in what he does, and always does his part to help keep the section running. He’s the kind of miner who doesn’t wait to be asked—if something needs done, he’s already stepping up to help.

Steve is always willing to lend a hand wherever it’s needed. Whether it’s helping a coworker, keeping production moving, or doing the little things that often go unnoticed, he’s always looking out for the team. His work ethic, dependability, and willingness to help others make him a valuable part of the 005 Section.

We appreciate everything Steve does for Excel Mining. Miners like him set the example through hard work, commitment, and looking out for the people they work beside every day.

100 DAYS. ZERO ACCIDENTS.

That’s something worth celebrating.

Today we’re recognizing an incredible milestone at Excel Mining—100 consecutive days with NO accidents. Not just no lost-time accidents… no accidents, period.

What’s even more impressive is that we accomplished this while continuing to meet and exceed our production goals. That’s a direct reflection of the men who show up every day, work hard, watch out for each other, and refuse to compromise on doing the job the right way.

These aren’t just words to us—they’re the standard we hold ourselves to every shift.

This achievement belongs to every underground miner, every maintenance employee, every foreman, every supervisor, and every member of our support staff. Everyone had a hand in making these 100 days possible.

We couldn’t be more proud of this crew. Mining isn’t just a job, and Excel Mining isn’t just a workplace. It’s a brotherhood. It’s men who have each other’s backs, hold each other accountable, and take pride in doing one of the toughest jobs on earth. We believe we have the best and toughest miners on the planet, and this milestone is proof of what can be accomplished when everyone pulls in the same direction.

A special thank you to everyone who came in early, stayed late, and worked behind the scenes to prepare breakfast and lunch for every shift so we could celebrate this achievement together. Your willingness to serve this team is appreciated more than you know.

Please join us in congratulating Charlie Leedy, our May 2026 Coal Miner of the Month!

Charlie has been a valued member of the Excel Mining team for nearly 17 years, and throughout his career he has consistently demonstrated the qualities that define excellence in our industry. As a roof bolter operator, Charlie is known for his unmatched work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to doing the job the right way every single day.

His dedication extends far beyond his own responsibilities. Charlie is the kind of miner who can be counted on for anything. He leads by example, helps bring out the best in those around him, and sets a standard of professionalism that others strive to match. Whether facing challenging conditions or routine tasks, he approaches every shift with the same determination and pride in his work.

Charlie’s commitment to safety and reliability is second to none, maintaining an excellent safety and attendance record throughout his tenure. His ability to maximize equipment performance and care for his tools recently led to an extraordinary achievement. During the month of May, Charlie bolted a record 83 full cuts using the same roof bolter bit, a remarkable accomplishment that reflects both his skill and his dedication to efficiency and equipment stewardship.

Charlie represents the values that make Excel Mining successful—hard work, safety, teamwork, accountability, and pride in the job. We are fortunate to have him on our team and grateful for the example he sets for everyone around him.

Please join us in congratulating Aaron Robinson as our latest Excel Mining “Miner of the Month” award recipient!

Aaron officially works as a Supply Hauler and Rock Duster on third shift, but unofficially, he can be found doing just about anything and everything needed to help make our mine better. His dedication, hard work, and willingness to always go above and beyond the call of duty are what make him such an important part of the Excel Mining team.

No matter the circumstance, Aaron always shows up with a positive attitude and a smile on his face. Employees like Aaron are the reason Excel Mining continues to be the safest, most productive, and best coal mine to work at in Eastern Kentucky.

We are extremely thankful for Aaron and for every one of our employees whose hard work and contributions help make our success possible each and every day.

Please join us in congratulating Tyler May for earning the Joy Mining Machinery “Coal Miner of the Month” Award! Tyler is an electrician on 005 section and has been a dedicated employee with Excel for 8.5 years. Tyler is known for his outstanding performance as an electrician and his excellent attitude no matter the circumstance. Tyler is also a certified Mine Emergency Technician-trained to be a first responder in the event of an accident underground. Thank you Tyler for all you do for all you do in keeping us running and making sure we can all do our jobs safely!
