Transmission Facility Ratings

Changes to transmission facility ratings require coordination across multiple stakeholders—both within the utility and with external organizations.

For example, rating changes should always be communicated to protection engineering teams. They must verify that protective relay loadability settings (such as overcurrent and distance elements) remain coordinated with the updated facility ratings to maintain compliance with PRC-023. Failure to do so can increase the risk of unintended equipment operations or outages.

Coordination also extends beyond the utility. Updated ratings may need to be communicated to neighboring utilities that share interconnected facilities, as well as to regulatory and market organizations such as Independent System Operators (ISOs).

With the industry's transition following FERC Order 881, transmission line ratings are increasingly being adjusted based on ambient conditions. As ratings become more dynamic, timely communication and coordination become even more critical.

Key takeaway:
Whenever transmission facility ratings are updated, ensure there is effective coordination between planning, operations, protection engineering, and external stakeholders. A well-defined communication process helps reduce compliance risk, avoid unnecessary engineering rework, and support the reliable operation of the power system.

How does your organization manage the communication of facility rating changes? Have you implemented a formal workflow, or is the process still largely manual?

Electrical Reliability & Safety Insight

This metering panel from a recent site visit highlights a common but often overlooked risk—lack of routine inspection and maintenance in facilities without dedicated electrical personnel. In this case, environmental exposure allowed insects and small animals to enter the enclosure. The result is visible damage, including thermal degradation on the center phase of the circuit breaker.

Conditions like this can stem from:
✅Phase imbalance or overloading
✅Contamination leading to insulation breakdown or shorting
✅Deferred maintenance and limited system visibility

These issues rarely develop overnight. They accumulate gradually—until they pose serious safety hazards, increase downtime risk, and lead to costly repairs or failures.

Proactive maintenance is not optional—it’s critical. Organizations that invest in regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and basic housekeeping of electrical equipment significantly reduce operational risk and improve system reliability.

Don’t wait for failure to reveal hidden problems.
